10102020 Saturday Monk Seal Dailies

Today's dailies are brought to you by Marilyn, Lesley and Team Billand. Lesley's Ka'ena update is part two of the dailies.

Marilyn did the Ka'ena trek this morning with Diane and Lesley ( its' been a long time since they were out there). When Marilyn got back to the east side she viewed Rabbit Island from 2:45 to 4:10 pm.  Today Marilyn had six seals ont he island.

About 40 ft Lanikai side of the 1BS there was an UAM#1 unknown adult male about 20% molt and 2 tags. The molt covered the upper ventral area and no sign of molt on the back.

About 40 ft Lanikai side of the 3BS was an unknown juvenile female UJF. A new coat, light female

belly and two tags. She moved up and down on the beach. This is likely the same as the U/J from yesterday.

Makapuu side of the 3BS were two seals. UAM#2 unknown adult male, with and old coat, dark male belly and 2 tags. Also UJM#1 unknown juvenile male, new coat, light male belly and two tags.

Near SRI was a male weaner with weaner size and coloration, no tags and light male belly.  Marilyn thought she saw an applied bleach "67" but of course he rolled over and she couldn't get another look. She thinks "maybe" the 67 could be L9 which would make this a Molokai weaner.  Maybe tomorrow will bring more information.

Out on the rock flats of Rocky Right Beach was an U/U unknown unknown. She only had a head on view of the the seal. Appears to be subadult to adult size.

Team Billand started out at 6:20 am and found Kawika R407 snoozing high up on shore alone. They kept some people from walking close to him, most listened, except one who didn't understand english. He went up to the seal with his Go Pro to get a video and Kawika wasn't having it. He raised up and barked at the man.  One nice lady who sees Team Billand all the time took it upon herself to put a line of rocks around him.  Kawika started to move down the sand to cool off when a family with their dog came. They were nice enough to keep it on a leash. Volunteer arrived so Team Billand left to check the outfall.

At 8:50 am Ka'ale was at the outfall leaving heading for a nearby beach.  Barb called out to the dog

owners that were in the water, they held the dogs back. Ka'ale would land and meet up with R407. They were very sweet with each other. New bosom buddies, they hugged and snuggled and then left for a swim.  Volunteer followed along, the seal hauled out at the next beach where Team Billand and volunteer were able to keep the visitors and locals back.  A diver had placed his spear in the sand and of course Ka'ale was hauling up. The volunteer got the diver to more the spear.  The two hauled out and back in the water again.

As a bonus Team Billand got to see some dolphins putting on a show.

At 10:12 Aukai RL12 hauled up in front of the many tents with people. Aukai is looking quite healthy and sandy leaning on a sand pile. There were no signs, just Aukai on shore with lots of people. Team Billand called the hotline.

Last stop Team Billand found RL70 Leina coming up on her secret spot to hide and snooze.

Kalani RN14 was on water front rocks, snoozing, stretching and he was in the company of RG28 Lefty.

After being there for a bit Team Billand looked down and to their surprise there was RH76 Kalas flippers.  They moved to the other side of the rocks, and there she was snoozing part on the rocks and part in the water. Eventually she moved to the water front rocks where she stopped immediately. The boys were in front of her, she remained right where she was.
