Marilyn took a vacation day today and decided to spend a little time viewing Rabbit Island for about 2 hours. Marilyn hit the jackpot with 8 seals today. Big difference from the one lone critter on the weekend.
Middle cliff area was an unknown weaner, no tags, yellowish belly (might be male) and no applied bleach.
Between middle cliff and 3BS was an unknown juvenile male #1 (UJM) juvenile size maybe a 2 year old, newish coat, lighter male belly, two tags. Marilyn noticed the seal left after an hour but returned about 30 minutes late by the 1st blue sign.
A loose group of 4 seals was located to the right of the 3BS. UM#1 unidentified adult, male belly, just
beginning to molt (about 15%) of an old coat, 2 tags. The molt has just started on upper chest and on lower right size.Unidentified juvenile male #2 probably a yearling, new coat, light male belly and 2 tags. Smaller in size than UJM#1.
Unidentified juvenile (UJ) newish coat, light belly and two tags. Marilyn wasn't sure if it was a female or male.
Unidentified adult male #2, older coat, male belly with lighter are in front of the penile hole, at least one tag, maybe the a chipped tag. Marilyn thought this could be Kekoa Alii RK72
Further down the beach near SRI were two weaners. PO5 weaner size, no tags, light female belly and no applied bleach. PO2 Nohea weaner size, no tags female belly and applied N2 bleach on right side. Thank goodness for the applied bleach.
Team Billand found Kawika R407 at 6:20 am alone on shore snoozing and is about 50% molted. They spotted a guy taking photos, and sure enought there was another seal hauling in.
Here come RG28 Lefty hauling up on shore. Kawika heard Lefty
sneeze, he galumphed all the way over. They argued a bit and Lefty headed for the water, Kawika following. For the next hour they played along the shoreline. At one point the seals were in front of the surfers, one came close on his ride, realized the seals were there, made it back out and aware from the seals in 20 seconds. Eventually the boys got tired, came on shore. People gathered, Team Billand called the hotline. They stood by and educated as many folks they could until 9:30 am.In between Robert went to check the outfall and spotted two seals, one being none other than Ka'ale, and a U/U. Both stayed in the area.
At 10 am Team Billand found RN14 Kalani alone on the rocks chilling.
At 11:45 RL70 Leina was seen at another west side location. She was hidden in her mid rock location. It took a while to just get an ID shot. She was alone in her own little hole.
Just before 1 pm they found Kolohe RW22 sleeping up on shore at Lani's. They put two signs from Auntie who was worried for him because of the people in the area. He was fine, they sat and watched over him for a bit. He is looking very green and huge.
Back to check on Ka'ale he was sleeping high up on shore alone. Volunteer was there and another person was checking on Ka'ale. Seems the boy got himself another hook, very light line. There were signs up and lots of folks on shore. The hook wasn't visible to Team Billand.
Team Billand went and did a recheck on Kawika R407 and Lefty RG28 still together. They seem to be doing okay with each other, being seal buds. (at least for today).
