9/5/2018 Monk Seal Dailies (part 2) Lesley's Update: Kahuku to Turtle Bay - Layman's - Birth Beach

After checking the gate, I came down to the front and saw RG40 "Holokai" hauling out he was galumphing his way at high speed towards my side along the waterline. I turned my head and saw R330 "Squinty" peaking from behind a sand wall on the waterline.
I had to leave to meet Tammy & Diane, We did a long over due hike from Kahuku to TBR.
Can't express how sad to see all the sea debris. The wildlife bird sanctuary has a giant sea debris trailer near one of their gates - some group must be planning a clean up. We pulled as much ropes and big trash up to the Naupaka as we went along. As Tammy & I were looking at trash, Diane ahead of us found the biggest treasure: RK80 "Katy". Unfortunately she opted to haul out among lots of plastic. We have seen other seals in the same spot over the years.Tony I love her nickname
We treated our selves to a delicious acai bowl at Kahuku Farms then went on to look for more seals. Didn't find any so we all went home.

I just came up from watching the sunset from the beach. R330 "Squinty" was still there. He was galumphing to be higher on the beach and perhaps will overnight.

Good news the U/M that showed up escorting R303 "BG" last week has been IDed. It's R333, a rarely seen male likely from Niihau.  He was first seen on Niihau, Kauai and Oahu in 2015 and only a handful of times.  Then only Niihau in 2016.  No confirmed sightings of him since then.  My guess is that he followed BG back from Niihau.  That's what we thought also !   More tomorrow🌺
