9/11/2018 Monk Seal Dailies: (part 1 ) RO28, RR70, RE74, RH32, RN14, RK72.

Today's dailies are brought to you by Team Billand & Lesley. Lesley's complete Ka'ena update is part two of the dailies.

Team Billand started their day early as usual but this morning they headed out to plains and found the beautiful miss Pohaku RO28. Team Billand called and left a message for the hotline.  They set up the signs and ropes, as there were plenty people on the beach enjoying the surf.  Team Billand left the site once everything was set up. After leaving the site they received two more calls about a 2nd and 3rd seal arriving.
Once they got the call about the 3rd seal and that the seals were fighting with one another, Team Billand headed back to plains.  When they got there, Pohaku was not involved in the fighting. But the two males that were fighting were ID'd as RIP RR70 and Benny RE74. They were going at it, Benny mouth wide opened, nostrils flared, dive bombing RIP. Then RIP in turn bites da Benny, they roll on shore still going at it. A crowd gathered everyone in awe. Even the life guard were out watching. People had lots of questions about what was going on, Team Billand did their best to educate.
In the end Benny gave up and entered the water, and RIP galumphed up to Pohaku to stand guard.
Benny lingered in the shallows, and eventually moved on heading west.
Pohaku and RIP remain together, when Team Billand left the site. They called and updated the hotline a second time.
This is reminiscent of the old days when multiple seals would show up at the beach and the boys would fight for the female. Some of the most infamous fights were between Benny and Kermit.... hmmm most of them usually involved da Benny.

In between Team Billand's trip to check on Pohaku and her suitors, they were at the outfall. Upon arrival they spotted a seal way off shore of the outfall and another seal way out in the Nanakuli direction, both foraging. They were too far away to make an ID.
The first seal to arrive foraging by the jetty was ID'd as RH32 Ka'ale. He was very busy chasing schools of fish. Volunteer Christina was on site watching, but had to leave. Team Billand stayed on and NOAA officer DeMello arrived shortly after. Meanwhile Kaale is till off the jetty to far to see what he was eating.  They lost sight of him shortly after.
Team Billand headed over to a nearby beach where Kaale hauls out, but were shocked to find RN14 Kalani on the rocks already sleeping. He stirred a little and then moved into the shallow pond.
About 20 minutes later Kaale arrives comes up on the rocks. He is still very very green and his tags were visible. He stayed at his spot not seeing or knowing RN14 was just up to the right.
Team Billand left them so no one would disturb them. They were unable to return as they had a busy day.

Not to be left out Team Billand did find Kekoa Alli RK72 on a westside beach alone on the rocks. He had been there pretty much everyday. Barbara noted that he has grown so big, a very independent male.  I join in with Team Billand in that we have known him since he was born to the Great Ewa Girl. (gosh I miss her)

I just love Benny! Back in the day he would have won that battle, but don't worry Benny you will find another lady. It cracks me up how Pohaku isn't the least bit involved, probably thinking those crazy boys.
