I hope everyone made it through the storm okay here on the islands, and my thoughts are with the folks on the South East of the mainland.
Team Billand went to the outfall to check on their favorite problem child RH32 Ka'ale. Upon arrival they spotted two seals and it was pouring rain. Along with Team Billand there were three fishermen out there today.... and yes they are all nuts :-)
They knew right away on of the seals was Kaale foraging. The other seal was a bit of a mystery. It had a really nice coat, big white muzzle, a small dark spot on chin and a ding between shoulders and a spot on its head. To their shock it turned out to be Aukai RL12. They spent several hours trying to figure out her ID and then they lucked out, when she dove they got the tag shot for confirmation.
Nice surprise was also greeted with a pause in the rain, waters were calm and gray skies, but they got both IDs and one of them was a nice surprise. Both seals never hauled out they just foraged the entire time. Just before Team Billand lost sight of them, they had a bit of a spat.
About 9:30 am Team Billand came across RN14 Kalani alone. He was hauled out in a shallow pond at a beach on the west side. He was resting peacefully. On their afternoon re-check he was still there.
An hour later they were at a west side beach they spotted Kekoa Alii RK72 foraging off shore. He was doing 6 minute dives and was alone. They went back a few hours later and he was still out there foraging. Guess he worked up quite an appetite during the storm.
Early afternoon Team Billand stopped by Nimitz and saw a seal from a far. There were two ladies sitting on shore, so they went to the site. The seal was RIP RR70 resting on shore, and the two ladies said they had called NOAA, and were waiting. The women told them some woman had already come by and said it was RR70, and they were able to confirm. After talking with the women they left the site knowing he was okay.
