06/18/2020 Thursday Act-With-Care (86) Monk Seal Dailies

Today's dailies are brought to you by Team Billand, Lesley, Melody and my nieces.  Lesley's Ka'ena update is part two of the dailies.

My two beautiful nieces paddled out to the Mokulua Islands today. When they arrived there was one smaller seal when a second hauled out. They were reported as an UF and UM. Both were pretty sandy and they did not see any tags, nor do any of the photos show tags. The larger darker appears to be a male and the smaller chubby one looks like a female. That's all I have to go on, we'll see what the posse comes up with.

Team Billand arrived at a west side beach before 7 am this where there has been a lot of activity lately. Initially they did not see any seal but LOTS of footprints.
There was a woman in the water as well as a seal. The seal in the water was Benny RE74 and he eventually landed about 20 minutes later.
The woman who was in the water ended up coming out of the water and got pretty close to Benny who ended up leaving the beach. Team Billand documented and reported the incident.

Just before 10 am they came across RH76 Kala at another west side location on the rocks. She was on the rocks getting hit by the waves. Finally she moved to another spot and remained there resting peacefully. She looking a little plump, probably getting some good eats.

Early afternoon they came across a couple of people looking over at something. Sure enough when they went to look there were two seals, RH48 Lei Ola and RF28 our Kauai boy. The seals were fine resting undisturbed.
Next and their last critter was Ka'ena West. They found R3CX resting alone on the rocks laying on his back. He ended up in the water hole, snoozing and his tags were visible.

Melody had an appointment in the city so she took the opportunity to visit with Nohea PO2. Today was extremely windy and the surf was high. Melody met up with posse pal Gayle and they found her sleeping. That didn't last long as she woke up and headed out into the rough waters. She is a strong swimmer and appears to enjoy the rough waters. She found a Cowry shell in the water and spent a good amount of time playing with it along with a couple of sea cucumber snacks.  She hauled back out where she started and settled in for a long afternoon snooze.
