06/06/2020 Saturday Act-With-Care (74) Monk Seal Dailies

Aloha good people, I hope you are all doing well. This weekend Hawaii has hit another milestone in that more businesses are opening and people are feeling a little more relaxed in that our numbers are still low. We have entered the Act-With-Care phase, and I hope people will do that. We are not out of the woods yet, but we are moving forward.

Team Billand was out before 8 am this morning. They first spotted
a seal foraging in the outfall. They spotted the seal chasing a fish as one of the fishermen was reeling it in. They saw the seal who they now know to be none other than Ka'ale RH32 head over to a nearby beach. They ran over to check him out, he looked fine no signs of any line or hooks visible. Thank goodness!  Team Billand called the hotline to report and inform them there were lots of people out today.
They stayed with him until 10 am when he went back to the outfall to forage and then disappeared. They never saw him again.

About 11 am Team Billand found Kalua RL20 alone resting on the rocks.  R3CX Nalu was to the right water front rocks, hidden away. It took some time to get a positive ID on R3CX but persistence paid off. His natural bleach on left side face and finally his tags.

Marilyn had a really big seal day today, in all there were seven seal on Rabbit Island.
At left point beach PO3 Momona, ID large weaner size and coloration, light male belly and no tags. HE came up out of an inlet and hauled out on the sand.
UAF (most likely Sadie) and PO5 (day 2) spent most of their time snoozing or moving up the beach due to the rising tide. Pup seems healthy and doing well.
A adult male was seen briefly on LPB rockflats. Then Marilyn realized he had disappeared and joined up with 3 other seals that were about 50 ft right of the 3BS.  Marilyn ID this adult male as RG32.

Originally Marilyn only spotted two seals at the 3BS but looking at her photos she spotted another seal up in the morning glory. She moved down to join the other two. Then RG32 showed up and visited with the three.
Marilyn believes the group to be RK38 Hali'a juvenile, lighter coat with lots of green, female belly and two tags.
PO1 Kahukai weaner size (smaller than PO3) male belly and no tags.
RK37 Huia, juvenile size lighter female belly with some green two tags and NB on left lower side.
