06/11/2020 Thursday Act-With-Care (79) Monk Seal Dailies

Today's dailies are brought to you by Team Billand and Marilyn. Both of them had a really busy day.

Because of the Kamehameha Day Marilyn had the day off, so off she went looking for weaner Nohea PO2. She walked the entire area and the little buggah was MIA. Good news Marilyn heard from Gayle later in the day and Nohea came back home.

Marilyn headed over to the pier and viewed Rabbit Island for a couple of hours. There were seven seals today!
PO3 Momona was on the rocks flats at LPB. He was doing a "snoopy" impression and later moved back into a tide pool and was barely visible. He was ID by extra large weaner size and coloration.
UF Mom (most likely Sadie RB12) and PO5 were at LPB. Marilyn observed one nursing session. PO5 spent some of the time hidden behind Mom and overcast conditions didn't help.

PO1 Kahukai hauled out near the 2BS. He was ID'd by his small size, weaner coloration, male belly and no tags.
Unidentified Juvenile Female was near the water line by the 3BS. She was ID'd by female belly, olfer coat and lots of green, dark green under eyes and two tags. A good possibility this is RK38 Hali'a,.
Unknown Male adult and RG32 were on the waterfront rocks near SRI. The UM was adult size with a fair amount of green, male belly and at least one tag.
RG32 adult male ID'd by his beautiful applied N11 bleach!

Team Billand was up and at em early this morning. They found RH32 Ka'ale alone on the water front rocks. Lei Ola RH48 was in her little spot when they spotted another seal coming into her area and it's RH76 Kala.
Kala galumphed up to Lei Ola and there was no confrontation. They shared the rock and rested peacefully. Lei Ola looks bulky and muscular next to Kala.
Team Billand left the site and will check back in the afternoon.

Team Billand headed out to visit with PO4 and on the way they came across none other than da Benny RE74.
Next they came acroos RK36 Kauai Kolohe (nice having him back on Oahu). He was resting alone on his side.
Same beach to the left was RG28 aka Lefty. Team Billand caught up with Lesley and she filled them in on who was who.

Team Billand bumped into volunteer Melina and they spot a seal. Once the seal came in they notices a line, a crimp with a hook on the left side of his mouth. They ID'd Kainoa RN04. This is Team Billand first time meeting this Rabbit Island boy.  Kainoa spots RG28 then turns make takes off towards Ka'ena Point. They notified NOAA.

They finally found the kid they came to see. PO4 Kai was in the cove getting pushed into the rocks then pulled out over and over again. But he stayed in the water for quite some time.
He left and moved onto the next cove where they saw him eat the weaner special "sea cucumber" . From there he went to the left by the rocks in the next cove and hauled out.
Well this is where RG28 Lefty was resting. PO4 approached Lefty with great enthusiasm. Maybe he thought it was Mom especially when he tried to suckle for a second.  Then it began for 30 minutes the two had a intense rough play session. Kai PO4 got mad and barked at RG29 over and over, mouth wide open.
RG28 Lefty relocated to mid beach but kept tabs on PO4.

PO4 finally settled down and went to sleep. This boy is quite a character facing off with one of the big boys.  Team Billand headed out about 2:00.

Team Billand made a final stop to check on Lei Ola and Kala. They were surprised to find RF28 had joined them. Lei Ola was in the water hole, Kala RH76 in the middle of her and RF28 to the right, getting closer to Kala. Kale RH76 was getting annoyed.
Team Billand didn't stay long and all three seals remained on the rocks.
