06/10/2020 Wednesday Act-With-Care (78) Monk Seal Dailies

Today's dailies are brought to you by Team Billand and posse pal Gayle.

I had heard that NOAA was going to try and bleach PO2 and PO4 since tagging them was unlikely until social distancing over and getting back to a normal work schedule. The easiest way to provide an ID is to apply a bleach number. It will be nice if they can get out to Rabbit Island to bleach PO1 and PO3.
Well today was the day that PO2 aka Nohea got her bleach number N2.  Gayle was out on the beach when Brenda from NOAA was able to apply her N2 on her right side and a half squiggly line on hind flipper. NOAA tried to wait to see if she would move to put another bleach on her back, but the kid wasn't haven't it.
Just a little note, in the past N2 was assigned to Kekoa and for years the applied bleach number stayed with a specific seal.  Don't know if the rules have changed or if it's just easy that this is PO2 so N2 makes sense.
I did hear through the coconut wire that PO4 was given a N4 bleach today too. ( see the pattern).

Team Billand was out early this morning to meet up with family. Of course they have to make a couple of stops to check for critters and they came up empty. AND it's a good thing because Barb forgot her camera.

Thankfully they were able to get their "pup" to drop off on their way to work. Team Billand spotted a beautiful female seal on the rocks. There was Lei Ola RH48 who probably just hauled out.
They checked her over and she is looking healthy no new markers or thank goodness hooks.

Next stop Team Billand see one seal and can not figure out who this critter is. Of course this does not sit well so Barbara is on a mission to figure this out. There were no outstanding markers, younger male and they see the tag F28!  Making some inquiries they figure out this little guy is from Kauai.

The only mark they could find was a small scar on the right side of his face, 2 light line scars on neck. If the tag is "F" series he's probably around 6 years old.  Through the coconut wire Team Billand figured out he has been at Ka'ena Point although he's a new find for them.

I was thinking, we had met Pohaku R028 in 2010 at Maili Pt.

Yesterday, we met her son, RF28, born on Kauai in 2014.
Today we met him again....so I told him in my mind, I KNEW YOUR MOM...POHAKU. She was an excellent Mother and she took good care of You and your brothers and sisters.

We feel so blessed....POHAKU LIVES ON!!!!!!!!! How cool is THAT??????????
