06/04/20 Thursday Safer-At-Home (72) Monk Seal Dailies

We have lots of seal updates! We have some yesterday news from Melody. Today's sightings from Team Billand, Team T&D, Marilyn and Lesley.  Lesley's Ka'ena update is part 2 of the dailies. I also want to give Lesley a shout out for all her work and commitment.  Today was a special day for her and I want to extend my warmest gratitude and congratulations.

In Yesterday's news department, Melody got to spend time with her favorite Momma none other than Rocky RH58. Rocky snoozed under the trees for most of the morning and then around lunchtime she started making her way to the water and headed out. She made a dive and surfaced with a couple of Honu, swimming away. (now that's a picture)
Melody then decided to head over to check in on Nohea PO2. There was a volunteer on duty reporting that she had hauled up around noon and had been snoozing for hours. She for sure was snoozing the day away, not much activity while Melody was there.

Team T&D hiked Ka'ena Point and their first find RL74 Kami. She was hauled out on the reefs, apparently one of her favorite spots.
Next was R3CX on the outer reefs. As the tide came up and the waves got bigger he got washed over and went back to sleep.
Last but not least they stopped to see Kai PO4 looking chunky and as adorable as can be.

Team Billand hiked out to Ka'ena West and their only find was RW02 PvKauai. He was alone resting on the rocks. ALL his tags were showing.  There were lots of people out there, but no other seals.
Barbara did note a couple of guys climbing down the rocks to surf, a little crazy!

Team Billand's only other find was RL20 Kalua way up in the rocks snoozing. The big waves were coming in again and hitting him, one flipped him over. He is looking quite green, but no sign of molting yet.

Marilyn viewed Rabbit Island today and found four seals. The tide was low when she first arrived, but with the king tides the seals were forced to move up close to the cliffs.
PO1 Kahukai was first seen in the middle cliff area and then later near the 3BS. PO1 ID'd by weaner size and coloration, male belly, no tags and smaller than PO3.
PO3 Momona was on the rock flats left of LPB. Later he moved onto the back of LPB next to the cliff. He is a larger weaner, male belly and no tags.
An Unknown Adult Female was seen. She is large size, darker female belly, 2 tags and no distinguishing marks. She started off near an inlet onto LPB and had moved up with the incoming tide. She was very aware of PO3 and a UU as she kept turning around and checking them out.
An Unknown Unknown, subadult to adult size critter with tags and "maybe" male belly. There may have been an applied N11 bleach which would ID this critter as RG32.
