07/22/2021 Thursday Monk Seal Dailies

Today's dailies are brought to you by Marilyn, Team T&D, Melody, posse pal Bobbi & Steve and Team R&B💕.

Marilyn viewed Rabbit Island from 12:25 to 2:05 this afternoon and observed four seals on island today.  Initially there were two seals at LPB, weaner P04 and a juvenile/sub-adult female. The J/F may be RK37 Huia. She was Id'd by her new coat, two tags, gray female belly and nb on her lower left side.

An adult male soon joined them and there was lots of posturing

among the three and they all entered the water about 12:37. Not long after RK37 hauled back out to LPB and went up and down several times.

Weaner P04 went to the rock flats Lanikai side of LPB and then she hauled out way back near the cliff at LPB.

At 12:45 Marilyn became aware of another unknown subadult female near the 3BS. She may have been up in the dunes earlier. She was soon joined by the adult male and there was a brief interaction before she headed back up into the dunes. Later she came back down onto the beach. She was subadult size, older coat and lots of green on her yellowish belly and two tags.

The adult male then entered the water again, later hauled out near SRI and then galumphed back to the subadult female. He had an old coat, dark male belly and a tag on his RRF.

In yesterday's news posse pal Bobbi and hubby Steve went to Ka'ena and saw this bathing beauty. They were unable to get a closer look but sent these photos to share!   Thank you Bobbi!!!!!

Team T&D hiked Ka'ena point, they were headed to the shoreline when they spotted a seal head swimming by. They watched and waited and it was Puka RP30. He stayed in the shallows, mainly playing with a disposable mask.  Sadly this is a sign of the times, that people need to learn how to properly dispose of their trash, at least cut the loops.  (Then again maybe the kid is letting us know we're not out of the woods and to stay safe)

Once T&D made it out to the point they had three seals. There was Ka'ena RO40, RL74 Kami who is

still hooked but doing well. Lastly they met up with Lesley and she pointed out RL98 Lina.

Team R&B went to see the sunrise this morning at plains, and they were not disappointed. They were treated to a bonus by finding Miss Rocky RH58 still high up on shore with signs.  They let Melody know that her Rocky was still there. Melody arrived and Team R&B headed for an appointment. They heard that Rocky had headed out about 10:30.

Melody was happy to watch over Rocky. For most of the morning she would just lift her head and sniff the air, as if another seal was around.  Rocky did head into the water about 10:30 picking up a few bites on her way out heading towards Waikiki.

As soon as Rocky left another seal hauled in. It was Da Benny RE74 hauling out on the same beach and stayed for a couple of hours. He then sniffed the air and quickly took off.  Bur before Benny left Team R&B returned to find their #1 son for the last 15 years. He is getting green and fat.

While checking other locations Team R&B spotted two seals from a distance. They finally made it over and ID'd RL42 Leia being pursued by RN14 Kalani.  They were relieved to find RN14 and called the hotline immediately. They watched him closely and noticed his left eye looked a lot better opened and they could see his eye, the white part was read but didn't look as bad as the last couple of days.

Kalani kept bugging RL42 Leia and then a tour boat arrived and let the folks out to dive. Kalani was aware of the boat and moved to the water hole, but still keeping his eye on RL42.
