07/20/2021 Tuesday Monk Seal Dailies

Today's dailies are brought to you by Team R&B💕

They started their morning watching RL20 Kalua for two hour early this morning. He is still foraging/stealing fish now and then. He stays close to the jetty, and at one point they saw him jumping on the rocks to grab a fish. The fisherman reeled his catch in so fast with all the others yelling out hurry!   On their recheck at 3:30 they found him still in the water but away from the jetty.

Team R&B kept getting messages about a seal haul out at plains.

They eventually were able to head over and hoping the seal would still be there. Sure enough the seal was on shore and they were thrilled to find Rocky RH58 snoozing.  The tide was rising and she got hit with a couple of good waves. The lifeguard helped move the zone and got folks to back away.

Rocky came galumphing up higher and higher and Team R&B had to ask people to move. They texted Melody to let her know Rocky was there, and of course Melody was on her way.  Team RB headed out when she arrived.  Melody stayed to about 5 educating people and telling Rocky stories. Thankfully Melody removed the ropes and put the signs up higher up on shore for Rocky.

Team R&B had searched and search and finally around 5:30 they found RN14 Kalani. He was resting on the rocks, and his eye wound seems smaller. There were fluids from his nostrils and possibly around the eye. All this was reported to NOAA and is under review, as he is now a seal of concern because of his wounds.  His flipper appeared to be a little swollen but could be his position on the rocks. He was sleeping soundly undisturbed.   They studied him for 30 minutes and took as many photos as they could to submit to NOAA.
