February 12 2019 Monk Seal Dailies

Todays dailies are brought to you by Team Billand.  All I have to say is this Team certainly sees a lot of stuff going down on the beaches!  Today they watched a rescue as it unfolded!  Wow!

Team Billand received word of a seal on shore at Plains. Luckily they were in the are so they went to check. There was Buster V08 up on the sand looking about and alert.  Team Billand noted he must have been at an all you can eat fish buffet because he is looking quite plump. Bigger than he did a few days ago.  There was a zone already in place when they arrived. Team Billand paid particular attention to his snout and there wasn't anything dangling. (could have been something like sea cucumber) Also he was acting quite normal.
Team Billand called the hotline to inform them of Buster. They left after an hour to search for more seals.

Team Billand arrived at a beach by the outfall and found Kaale RH32 alone on the rocks. He was resting peacefully and looking fat.  While viewing him they heard a man yelling from the ocean and then a woman. They were both in trouble way out near the outfall.  Team Billand called fire and rescue and shared their binoculars with another guy who had some knowledge of what was happening.  The boat Kai Ole Ole was off shore with tourist, Team Billand and others on shore got there attention and point them to the couple in the water.
The crew threw the guy a life ring and a noodle to the lady, they were both picked up and were safe. Firemen and lifeguards came along soon after.  Team Billand spoke with the lifeguard on the beach, which turns out to be someone they have known for a long time. In the end a jet ski brought the couple in with another couple.   Team Billand "YA DONE GOOD!"

I can only speak for myself, in that I probably would have called it a day after all that, but not Team Billand... onward and upward.  Next stop they first spotted Kekoa alone on high rocks.. To the right mid rocks was RW02 PvKauai snoozing with his head down. While watching the two boys, little
Kawena RH36 came up next. She galumphed up on the rocks to lower rock and stayed there basking in the sun.

At another westside beach, Team Billand looked around the area and didn't see anything.  So they settled for looking out for whales.  Suddenly they heard sneezing, so there was proof something was stirring. There were two seals hauling in on the rocks  The newcomer R7AV was trying to haul up on the rocks, with a smaller seal following her. She seemed a bit annoyed at the youngster who turned out to be Kaimana RJ58. Capturing a decent picture for ID purposes was not an easy task.
Then Team Billand noticed movement and there was a 3rd seal already hauled out snoozing in between the rocks. It's little RK88 Puna snuggled into the rocks and very well hidden.

R7AV swung her hind flippers at Kaimana as if to say LEAVE me alone already.  Kaimana being a good seal got the message and went to sleep.
Team Billand didn't hang around for a long time as to not draw attention to these beautiful critters.

So glad Buster is okay - love and blessings to the Billands for all they do! True heroes for the seals!
