February 15, 2019 Monk Seal Dailies

Todays dailies are brought to you by Melody, Team Billand and Lesley. Lesley's Ka'ena Update is part two of the dailies.

Melody was at home working on her computer this afternoon when she decided to take a break and head down to the beach. Well her instincts were good because there was big ole' Rocky RH58. She had hauled out earlier and was laying close to the waters edge.  With all the little piles of sand it looked like she was making sandcastles (lol).  Soon after Melody arrived it started to drizzle so she set up a zone around her. A few people were out and about more of them at sunset.  Melody stayed until sunset and will check with her in the morning.

Team Billand was on the west side and their first sighting of the say came after 9 this morning.  Our east side girl Kawena came in like a bullet. Then she galumphed up on lower rocks, and later moved to the sandy hole to sleep the rest of the day.
They spotted another critter foraging doing 6 minute dives, and didn't land on his first visit.  They ID'd him as RIP RR70.
Later when Team Billand went back to check in the afternoon, he landed where normally the water is full, but this afternoon it was dry and RIP looked huge.  Kawena was just across from him snoozing.

Team Billand had gone to White Plains in the morning, saw all the signs and poles up but there were no seals. They put everything away and walked around a bit but there were no seals.
Late morning Team Billand was already on the Leeward side when their phone rang about a seal at plains.  Of course they went back!
When they arrived there the life guards had already set up a zone. Team Billand called the hotline to report it. Team Billand was able to ID Buster V08.

Driving back to the leeward side Team Billand spotted a seal on shore of one the beaches by the
homeless camps.  Interestingly someone drew a very large circle around the seal. Team Billand was able to ID RW02 PvKauai. There was a loose dog with a haku lei running about and a lady taking videos. The seal was fine, no one bothered him.

While heading further west they made one more stop at 3:00 to find RL42 Leia on the rocks alone today. It was raining but she was undisturbed and rested peacefully. They noted her recent bites from the shark have healed up with just a small scar left.

And last but not least there were whales and dolphins all around.
