February 10, 2019 Monk Seal Dailies:

Todays dailies are brought to you by Team Billand.  While the rest of us were freezing our little island tooshies, they were out there making sure the critters were accounted for.

Team Billand was walking towards a spot on at a westside beach, when two ladies approached and said: "we found a seal and we think it's dead!"  Well that got Team Billand off and running and right there in front of them was good ole Benny RE74. He was nice and dry sleeping just fine on this blustery cold day. Not to mention it was raining too.
Team Billand took the time to explain to the ladies about Benny and Monk Seal 101, also thanking them for telling someone.

Next stop they spotted a seal coming in fast with the high surf and strong winds. It was RH32 Kaale, and he fought his way up and over the rocks landing on a small patch. Seems there was a small white thing that bothered him, he mouthed it, sniffed and finally gave up and went to sleep.  Team Billand waited but no other critters arrived.

Team Billand headed over to Plains and by Tower one was a seal sleeping in a small zone already up. The signs were blown over by the strong winds, so Team Billand picked them up. They were able to ID Buster V08 with a snot in his nose, and thankfully it is not an eel!  They were there for over an hour and then Buster opened  his mouth wide, turned to the ocean then he suddenly shuffled down to the waters edge. He waited a moment and then into the water, foraged a bit and then gone.

Team Billand stopped at Kahe to check out the area but the wind was so strong and the salt spray was heavy. They did spot a seal in the surf, for a moment they thought it would land but it kept going heading in an easterly direction.

Thank you Team Billand and to anyone else that was out there today!  You are appreciated!

Is that fishing line I am seeing in Buster’s nose? I blew the photos up on my iPad and it looks like there’s line coming from his right nostril. The mucus in the left nostril is pinkish.

GOOD CALL...

Looking closer it does look like a line .... and maybe a little swelling.
Thank you!
