8/18/2018 Monk Seal Dailies: (part 2) Lesley's Ka'ena Update - Yesterday and Today

As most of you must have heard, read, seen HIKIANALIA finally set sail to San Francisco today. After an all day on standby yesterday and a nearly 3 weeks delay. Crew call was at 5:00am so Kimo & I left the house at wee hours of the morning. After a couple of meetings with the crew the green light was given. Family, friends and crew held hands in a big circle, Captain Lehua and Nainoa said some words then we all chanted and blessed them. The crew got ready and reality sank in again... there he goes again to his happy place.
Thank you for all for the well wishes I passed them on to him & crew.

I headed back home, met Marilyn and off we went to monitor Ka'ena Pt.
Marilyn had already spotted RK40 "Napua" in front of our house and RK88 "Puna" at Birth Beach / Tables. We checked on both again and did some outreach.
Next we found RN58 "Luana" alone @ 10Mnts Beach.
In the NARS we found RO40 "Ka'ena" in Squinty's Cove. He was in a position and the light was terrible to try to ID him. Knowing that "KKolohe" is around we really have to see more than 3 marks to ID them if tags ain't visible.
We did a lot of outreach.
In the afternoon I went back out. "Napua" had left the front of our house - to many people on the beach? and I found her mid beach on Birth Beach/Tables. "Puna" was in the same spot.
RN58 "Luana" was still at 10Mnts beach.

For yesterday 2018-08-17 I was able to head out for a couple of hours in the late afternoon.
In front of our house one of the weaners was playing and foraging in the shallow waters. My 3 great tag shots while it was diving were either blurry or shinny cause of the sun light so the kid went as a U/U.
At 10Mnts Beach RN58 "Luana" and R330 "Squinty" were sleeping peacefully. I was told by the Hotline that "Squinty" had not been IDed during the day.   More tomorrow ðŸŒº

smooth sailing & god speed
