8/29/2018 Monk Seal Dailies:

Today's dailies are brought to you by Team Billand, Lesley and Melody. Lesley's complete Ka'ena update is part 2 of the dailies.

Team Billand got stuck in some heavy traffic this morning, what normally would take them 10-15 minutes took them over an hour.  I can't imagine how frustrating it be!

They got to the outfall a little later than usual, but still found Ka'ale RH32 foraging.  Today he managed to steal an akule from one of the fishermen, but mostly managed to find his own. Team Billand headed out to check other sites.
Later in the day when they returned they found Ka'ale hauled out by one of the nearby beaches. He was on the rocks, moving very slowly... hmm could it be his weight? He is certainly eating his fair share and then some.

Team Billand did the Ka'ena west trek, and something very unusual happened. They came across a seal semi submerged in a water hole, in a hippo position, but they were unable to ID (say what??)
They noted scars mid shoulder, as well as further down on back, a small ding on the right side. Barb thought it could be either RN14 or RW02, but reported it as a U/U.

Still on their Ka'ena west trek, they found a critter in a "spot" that they walk by everyday and there is never a seal there. Well today there was in the corner, but as they went to check there were lots of people around. They motioned to the folks to pull back and not disturb the seal and they happily obliged. Once Team Billand got a good look they could see RL42 tags. RL42 Leia was resting peacefully, and looking a little thin. Now that she has her new coat, she needs to get out there and get a couple of good meals.  (hmmmm maybe RH32, would be willing to share some of his grub).

Melody headed up to the North Shore this morning. She arrived at one of the beaches and spent about 45 minutes checking out the area. She was just ready to leave when she heard a familiar snort, something line blowing water through their nose. It had to be a monk seal, and sure enough a minute later one comes in floating with the waves around the rock wall. The critter came into the cove and galumphed its way up between two rocks. Melody took some photos and was able to get a tag shot showing G41. It's Holokai!!!  She suspected it was him with his shiny new seal suit. She called him into the hotline and stayed for about another hour. While she was there no other seals were in the area. But who needs any other critters with this handsome dude.!
