I would like to take this opportunity to wish Robert a very Happy 80th Birthday !!!
Marilyn viewed Rabbit Island from 12:17 to 2:33 pm and there were nine seals seen during that time.
At 1:09 pm a Weaner Male hauled out at the left back LPB and moved along the cliff. The WM: weaner size, light male belly, and at least two red tags.
At 2:12 pm, Weaner Unknown 1 also hauled out on the left back LPB and moved up and past the W/M. WU1: weaner size, with a silver dollar size NB on the right mid side. Not sure about tags or sex.
In the middle of LPB were two seals. The first seal labeled as Weaner Unknown 2: weaner size, new coat, light ventral and at least two tags.
At 12:24 pm a Juvenile Unknown hauled out of LPB channel to join W/U2. The Juvenile Unknown was large juvenile to small sub-adult size, old coat, at least one and probably two tags, sex unknown. The JU stayed with WU2 during the rest of Marilyn's viewing session.
Closer to the 1BS on LPB was Mom RH76 Kala and PO13. The pup tried to crawl over mom and at one point and as usual moved around a lot. Marilyn did not knowingly see any nursing today.
A short distance Makapuu of the 1BS among the waterfront rocks was PO10: weaner size, light ventral female and no tags.
At 1:28 pm Marilyn became aware of a weaner size seal that hauled out of the SRI channel and moved a fair distance onto the beach. Marilyn labeled this seal as Weaner Unknown 3: weaner size, no info on tags or sex.
On the rock flats on the RRB side of the SRI channel, was a molting sub-adult unknown: darker old coat, about 30% molted on the upper chest, not sure about sex.
Team R&B arrived at the pup site and found the seals on the reef, tide was really low. Small pond were RH58 Rocky and her pup PO11. The pup was exploring with things in the pond, sometimes playing with a rock or two.
Seems the Seal Watch group were kind enough to bring cake and goodies to celebrate Robert's birthday. They even sang happy birthday. A very nice way to celebrate with folks and Rocky and PO11 on day 29.
The tide was rising some so they had a nursing session on the rocks, then went for a swim. After the swim they landed at the birth beach side, of course outside the fenced area.
Team R&B took a little break to catch up with family. When they went back to check Rocky and pup were now in rough water, due to king tide. Both were swimming, being pushed about by the waves. water shooting up on shore. Everyone had to move up a couple of times.
Rocky god bless her finally got to shore, turned upside down along side her pup. She's seems exhausted. The two of them entered the water again and swam up where the kids were in the ponds. Team R&B were able to get the kids back and moved the signs.
Rocky was peaking above the water and then galumphed up on shore slowly. She does this behavior, and ends up going higher up. She tosses her head right to left, then up comes her long neck and the rest of her old body. Rests some then continues. Meanwhile PO11 barking at her from below, joins her to bite her tired skin. At time Rocky will slap he to make her stop biting.
Mom and pup went up by the driftwood area, that was moved by some nice guys yesterday. Signs and ropes all moved again for the night.
