06/12/2021 Saturday Monk Seal Dailies

Today's dailies are brought to you by Marilyn and Team R&B💕.  I did hear from Lesley today and she had a 14 seal day, and amazingly was able to ID 12 out of the 14. We can look forward to her report tomorrow.

Marilyn viewed Rabbit Island from 12:05 to 2:05 today, she saw five seals today.

On the rock flats Lanikai side of LPB was UU#1, adult size, and that's about all she got on this unknown unidentified. The seal was snoozing on it's back and was only there for a short time.

On the rock flats near SRI were RL12 Aukai and P04. There were difficult to see because they were

frequently obscured by the waves. About 12:55 they hauled out between 3BS and SRI. After a nursing session, P04 moved up the shore a ways and then, like most pups, she started playing with something (Marilyn wasn't sure if it was a rock or a twig.). Mom is already beginning to look a bit thin, even though she has another 10-12 days of nursing. Needless to say P04 is packing on the pounds.

As Marilyn was doing a last sweep of the shore before closing up for the day, she spotted two seals. UU#2 and UU#3 on the rocks flats Makapuu side of RRB. They had not been there earlier, and they were only there briefly before entering the water.

UU#2 was juvenile to subadult size with an older brownish coat and at least one tag. UU#3 was adult size with a darker coat and at least one tag. After they entered the water, Marilyn did not see them again.

Team R&B went out at first light and went to check yesterday's hot spot. But they only saw one seal foraging close to the jetty. As soon as people started to arrive in the water the seal moved further out. They had ID'd little green Kalua RL20. They haven't seen him hauled out for a while now, but I bet he's putting on some weight after all this foraging. They did a recheck after picking up junior sealette and he was still there foraging.

Team R&B then headed over to check the outfall and spent time talking with the fishermen. They said they saw a seal eating fish off some of the nets that were close to the jetty area. Team R&B did see RN14 Kalani in the outfall and then he slowly made his way towards tracks but he kept going then he was gone.
