06/01/2021 Tuesday Monk Seal Dailies

Today's dailies are brought to you by Team R&B and yours truly. 💕 

I met with Marilyn today and we observed Rabbit Island for an hour and half. There were only three critters on the island today.  I us the term loosely that we observed Aukai Rl2 and P04 because they were hidden behind the waterfront rocks by the 2BS. In fact if Marilyn hadn't seen them I would have missed them completely.  Aukai keeps that kid very well hidden.

There was an adult female past the 3BS at RRB.  She was a very

healthy size, older coat and a light female belly.  We never got a positive ID and she was reported as an U/F but our best guess is this was Right Spot. Based on her size and that she was in the neighborhood yesterday. 

Team Billand had better luck today. They found Lefty RG28 and RH76 Kala at a westside beach. Both look to be in good condition. There are no new markers or anything of concern. The tide was high and the waves knocked RG28 Lefty off the rocks and turned him around.  This seemed to please RH76 Kala.

They also found R3CX Nalu at seal inlet today. He was very cooperative and showed his tags. Welcome back to the west side.  All the seals were still in the same spots on their last check. But all three had their own private ponds cooling off on this very hot day.

Team R&B made it out to Ka'ena West and found Miss Lei Ola RH48, molting away. Her molt looks to be at 75%. They were thrilled to find her and right after they did she went into the water to cool off and get rid of more peeling fur.

Still at Ka'ena West they spotted something on the rocks and when they checked it out it was Benny. As

they were getting their ID photos he entered the water, went for swim in the shallows, rolling about. He then laid on the rocks, dove into the water and was gone.  Their timing was perfect! 

The last seal they found at Ka'ena West was when they were leaving and saw a seal on the rocks chilling. They ID'd this seal as R407 Kawika, by the scar on forehead, ding on shoulder.
