06/09/2021 Wednesday Monk Seal Dailies

Today's dailies are brought to by Melody, Gamma Gayle and Team R&B💕.

We have lots of photos from Melody and Gamma Gayle of our new weaner Loli'i P02. Seems Kaiwi couldn't make up her mind yesterday.  Melody arrived at the sight a little late yesterday and had gotten word that Kaiwi and Loli'i had gone for a swim and only Loli'i returned. Melody made it to the beach when the pup was resting against the rocks on the jetty, where he stayed for a while.  They all thought that was it we have a weaner. But Kaiwi wasn't quite ready and she returned and gradually made her way up to the pup. Of course there were nuzzles and he helped himself to a snack. Soon after Mom took him into the water and headed their usual route past OCC and Elks Club then to parts unknown.  They waited for them to come back and were surprised that only Loli'i returned and hauled out on his little beach.
Now they thought for sure we had a weaner! He stayed for a bit and then went and took his first solo swim. They saw him forage and was only picking up rocks alone the way, no fish or sea cucumbers. He went over by the buoys and that's when they lost sight of him. Much to their surprise the pup didn't return but Momma Kaiwi did. She obviously not ready to let go. She went to the beach and frantically started barking, she periscoped her head over the jetty looking. She then went along the jetty to see if he was foraging and then back the way they had headed earlier.
Unfortunately at this time Melody had to leave but just as she was on her way out she got text and headed back to OCC. Loli'i came back and was alone, therefore a weaner.  Once Melody left she got a text that Kaiwi had returned by never reunited with the pup.  Such a confusing day for everyone including poor Momma Kaiwi.

Early this morning, Team R&B spotted little RL20 Kalua was once again foraging near the end of the jetty. Unfortunately, paddle boarders came alone with snorkelers, then the dolphin boats, and little RL20 went around the jetty and out with a school of Akule.
Team R&B was soon treated and over joyed to find Lei Ola RH48 on the rocks snoozing. Apparently she had been there for a while. Her new silver gray coat was completely dry.
On their second visit RL20 Kalua was gone. But Miss Lei Ola had moved to the other end of the rocks. The tide was rising and she was getting wet, which she'll probably depart soon.

Team R&B had another great find, there was a seal and it just slept in one position forever. Then they
could see it was Da Benny RE74 snoozing in a shallow pond. They were happy to see him back on the west side again.
If seeing their boy wasn't enough to the right was Miss RH76 Kala. She was also snoozing peacefully.
On their last visit, Benny had moved over to Kala to bug her. They had some interaction, but some guys came by and it didn't feel safe so they left the area. Both seals remained, but who knows what will happen once the tide comes up.

Late email from Melody informing us that as of today there was no sign of Kaiwi today. Little weaner (OK not so little)  Loli'i was laying on the sand up against the OCC front wall snoozing He had just come in from a swim.  After snoozing for a bit he went to go for a swim but there was a pink floatie coming in and he was hesitant about moving forward. As the floatie got closer he started barking at it and scooted into the water. This was his first big boy test without mom. The floatie floatie followed him and he high tailed it into the water riding some waves.
When he returned he hauled out near the jetty and came all the way up. It looked like he was heading for the top of the jetty (Gamma Gayles worst fear) but the little buggah turned around and moved to the sand. He eventually made his way to the rubbish can by the walkway and this is where he was when Melody left at 7 pm.
