Catherine a Ka'ena Point/NARS volunteer sent Lesley a couple of photos seal from Ka'ena Point. Lesley is ID'ind this female as R353 by CC scars size and position no tags. (some of the photos did not load properly so I went with what came through)
Marilyn was out on the east side today, first stop was to Spitting cave this morning at 8:36 am, she saw a seal right in front of the large rock. This seal was doing 7 minute dives, and although she did not see tags, she spotted a large natural bleach behind the RFF and determined was RW22 Kolohe. Although she never saw his belly, that beautiful cue ball bleach was enough!
Next stop for Marilyn was at Kokee Flats around 9:45 am while the tide was low. She spotted a large seal on the flats expecting it would be Kaiwi but as soon as she saw the ventral side it didn't look like her. As Marilyn got a better look to see it was R016 Right SPot based on her natural bleach on her right rear side and her notched hind flipper. She is looking healthy and plump. * note: Marilyn checked DB's records and it seems this is Right Spots first known visit to the flats. " What are these ladies doing? " Boy DB would be having a field day with this years pattern of haul outs.
On that note, Gayle checked Kokee as well and was surprise and happy to see Right Spot resting. Sure it's a lot more peaceful than Diamond Head. The fisherman in the photo isn't as close as he appears and he was helpful steering folks away.
Apparently Kaiwi showed up after she left but she got a text from a friend around 14:00 and was able to get some nice photos from posse Linda's house.
Marilyn hung out at the pier today a little before noon. She spotted one seal on Rabbit Island between the 3BS and SRI. The seal was a subadult to adult and had a male belly. The midventral area seemed blotchy but she couldn't make an ID. He was the only critter on RI today, Marilyn stayed until 1320.
Team Billand checked a Leeward Beach where RN14 Kalani hauled in, looked around, landed and was alone all day.
On their rounds, a man told them of seals on the shore by the Jetty. They checked out the area and they were able to ID Kekoa RK72, Kaale RH32 and PvKauai RW02 on shore. There was a going to be a big party near by so they called the hotline and informed them of the location, which seals were there and that a large party was going to take place. At 1230 volunteer Mike showed up, but unfortunately poor Mike didn't have any signs neither. Team Billand left the site to continue their rounds and rechecked on the three critters still there and Mike was still there.
