Marilyn's update is short and sweet. She made the Ka'ena Point Trek today and although she checked many beaches, nooks and crannies, tide pools and rock piles there wasn't a seal to be found.
Gayle had only one find today, her favorite Kaiwi was at the grotto resting peacefully. Gayle also mentioned that Right Spot was seen today, although she did not have any photos (yea Right Spot).
Team Billand was out at 6:15 am at plains, there were no seals, so they waited for the sunrise. As you can see it was worth the wait. After taking their sunrise photos they left the site only to get a call from surfer friend Mike, "there is a seal on shore, not sure if its okay, its all the way up in the bushes". Team Billand turned around and at 7 am they found Rocky RH58 at plains fence line. She was snuggled in the bushes ID'd by scar on left side of face (that RIP did years ago), ding on right shoulder, natural bleach mark on left flipper two white nails.
They put up signs and ropes to make a zone, since today was an Access Surf event taking place. They called the hotline a couple of time to inform them of the anticipated crowds for the surf event. Some of the surfers were worried there was something wrong with the seal since it was so high up on shore, but they were assured the seal was just getting some rest. Team Billand left the site at 8:40 to check other sites. They returned later in the afternoon and was told that a volunteer came around noon but Rocky left the site about 15 minutes later.
Next stop Leeward Beach where they found a seal way in of high rocks to the left. They spotted the bumps on his back was ID'd as Kekoa RK72. They waited for others to arrive, and then came Aflac the duck. Barbara was ready with some water, lettuce and peas. He was a happy duck wagging his duck tail, and then settled down for a nap.
Searching over the water to the left and right two more seals spotted swimming off shore. They waited and waited for them to come in but they didn't kept going, they never landed.
Team Billand left to check another site, hoping to catch these two critters hauling out. They headed out to Nanakuli they spotted two seals on shore. There they found Kaale RH32 and PvKauai RW02 sleeping near each other. As they were in the process of ID'ing the critters a gentleman came over and had some questions for them. He told them they arrived together fighting at the shore line and then falling asleep. They explained they didn't have any signs but were calling the hotline and reported the seals. Team Billand had to get on their way but did check back later and did find volunteer Kevin there so they were in good hands.
