Gayle's only find today was her favorite critter, Miss Kaiwi RK96.
Team Billand on the other hand had a bit busier day. It all started at 6:50 am with Benny RE74, while they were out searching they spotted a seal on shore at Tracks from afar. When the drove down to the site to investigate they found good ole Benny resting high up on shore alone.
They put up some sticks around him, and a man who was passing by told them there had been people close by him earlier. They called the hotline and waited with Benny until volunteer arrived at 7:39. They updated the volunteer and were off to their next stop.
Upon arriving at a Leeward Beach they could hear and see two seals fighting in the shallows. It tool a little bit of time with all the commotion, but they were able to ID the larger seal as RN14 Kalani and the smaller one Kaale RH32.
For some reason Kalani RN14 was very agitated today, he held Kaale down under the water for a long time. This went on for about 20 minutes or so, when Kaale RH32 got tired he became submissive. But RN14 wasn't letting him go, he help diving on Kaale, finally Kaale was motionless, needless to say this scared the crap out of Team Billand. Kalani RN14 bumped his belly and Kaale got up and darted out to open waters.
Kalani RN14 stayed, but relocated to other side of site off to the right. He hauled up on rocks, barking out so loud, looking for Kaale, right, to the left, but he was gone. He then completed his haul on rocks and went to sleep. Team Billand waited an hour, but Kaale didn't come back so they left the site.
On their last visit today they went back to the site they saw Kaale RH32 had returned. He was resting on his side. There was a man walking with his dog just 30 feet of Kaale, who awoke suddenly with a tail thrash, clearly startled. The man saw the seal, his dog saw the seal, but the man held the dog back and he was okay. Kaale re-positioned himself, to face the man and dog. Kaale snorted so loud it even scared Barbara. The man got his dog and left the site. However it was too much for Kaale he wasn't taking any chances so he dove into the shallows and left by 1:30.
Kalani RN14 remained alone, still snoozing when the left the site.
Last but not least Team Billand found Lei Ola RH48 at a westside beach. There she was, on her side resting on the rocks. ( I really really wish this critter would find a nice sandy beach and get off the rocks). She is still in good condition, alert and yes still hooked. Team Billand spent time educating some of the people who were passing by and shared their binoculars.
