03/25/2021 Thursday Monk Seal Dailies

Today's dailies are brought to you by Team T&D, Team R&B and yours truly.  Before we get into the dailies I just want to wish Barbara a very happy birthday. And to let her know how much she is appreciated and loved by us!  Thank you Barb for all you do!

Team T&D met up with Lesley and drove out to the point then hiked Keawa'ula side. Their first find was Luana RN58, and next was our old buddy RK36 Kauai Kolohe. Lastly at the point they found Squinty R330 at the water line and Kami RL74 tucked up by the naupaka.

On the Keawa'ula side they saw a seal on their way back that wasn't there earlier. It took some time but they ID'd RL42 looking quite large. They checked one more beach and as happy to find Holokai RG40 sleeping among the debris.

Team R&B got started after they waited out the heavy rains and having breakfast. It was sad to see the

water being so brown. When they did go back out they saw whales and the skies finally turned blue.

At a west side location they found RH76 on the rocks by seal inlet. She stayed there all day. RW02 PvKauai was on a sand patch, then moved himself to the playboy pond and remained there all day.

Team R&B took a ride out to pokai bay and found a seal on shore. It was an adult female with tags. It was difficult to the ID.  They were unable to get the ID when they got a call and had to leave.  They did find RL20 Kalua on the rocks. They got a good look at his face and he has a one inch wound that is open. It could have been caused by a hook, but he is doing just fine.

I observed Rabbit Island for about an hour today. I will say I was a little surprised how strong the winds were, which made steadying the scope a real challenge. There were seven seals on island today, and the only ones I knew for sure was RF34 Pua and P01.  They were in front of the 3rd BS and lined up to the right of them was 3 youngsters. The first two were reported as unknown juveniles and the last one was a juvenile male.

About 60 feet Makapuu side were two more critters. Another juvenile and an adult male.  Wish I had more to go on but it was just too windy to get clear photos.
