03/07/2021 Sunday Monk Seal Dailies

Today's dailies are brought to you by Marilyn, posse pal Justin T. and Team R&B💕.

Justin and Christine hiked Ka'ena point today and saw two seals on the north shore side. They called it into the hotline. They first found RL98 Lina id'd by her very worn 206 tag, small size and female belly. She was on back beach resting on loose coral and sand.  The next critter they found was N44 (mr. green) ID'd by his tag and male belly. He was on the sand near a tent at 10 minute beach. The two seals looked to be in good shape snoozing the day away.

Marilyn viewed Rabbit Island from noon to 2:30 today. When she first arrived the security guard told

her there had been four seals playing around the pier around 9:30 this morning. He described the seals as two big and two little ones. He said it appeared they were playing and stuck around for about about an hour. He did see tags on one of the larger seals but could not read it.

Viewing the island Marilyn initially saw two seals, an adult and a juvenile that was partially hidden near SRI.  Then within a few minutes, one seal hauled out alone at LPB. Turns out there were five seals and they were all male.

At LPB was Seal 1; unidentified subadult, lighter male belly and two tags. He may have had a line scar on his left rear side.

At Middle cliff, two seals hauled out together onto the rock flats. Seal 2; unidentified subadult,, light male belly and two tags. Possible NB inside RRF, and seems a bit chubby.  Seal 3; unidentified adult, light gray mottled male belly and two tags.

At SRI were two seals. Seal 4; unidentified adult with gray male belly and two tags. For some of Marilyn's viewing time he was blocking the view of Seal 5; unidentified small juvenile with yellowish male belly, older coat and no tags. By his size, it could be one of the 2020 pups and might be the same UJM2 from yesterday.

Team R&B found Kaale RH32 foraging at the outfall. They didn't stay long as they saw another seal

and wanted to check it out. There was Lefty RG28 on shore at tracks alone. They called the hotline and waited around to see if any other seals were in the area. The beach was filling up with the crowds, some nice people, some rude. THANKFULLY volunteers came with signs and ropes. While the volunteers were setting up the signs and ropes, Team R&B noticed another seal coming in. Here comes Kalani RN14 right up to Lefty. The boys G28 and N14 had a few arguments but finally settled down.

Team R&B headed back near the outfall, and found two seals resting on the rocks. Kaale RH32 was to the left and Kekoa RK72 was to the right on the water front rocks.  They left the boys while they were resting and went back later to check. Kaale was slithering off to leave and Kekoa was still resting.

Team R&B went to KoOlina to check and were thrilled to find who they been searching for all day. There was Kolohe RW22.  While people were busy chasing turtles, Team R&B watched Kolohe resting on the rocks. They called the hotline. As far as they could tell he looks fine except the little pink wound on his snout. As Team R&B were leaving volunteers were arriving.

Final stop of the day at another west side location they found two seals on the rocks resting. There was Nalu R3CX and RW02 PvKauai near seal inlet.
