03/28/2021 Sunday Monk Seal Dailies

Today's dailies are brought to you by Marilyn and Team R&B💕

Marilyn viewed Rabbit Island for about two hours mid afternoon. During her entire visit the only seals on island were mom and pup. And let's just say that P01 was hidden behind mom except for about five seconds when it peaked its head out from behind her, which makes for a very long 2 hours.  Thankful that Marilyn got a glimpse and a picture of the kid.

Team R&B started their day spotting a seal in Lagoon 4 trying to haul

in. They asked people to give it some room, they could see it was Aukai RL12 and she is looking pregnant. Volunteer was on site with Team R&B. People continued to approach the seal and they asked over and over for people to stand back.  As Aukai was coming in Team R&B noticed a line in the left corner of her mouth.  Finally she hauled out and started thrashing her head about, exposing her tongue she clearly was uncomfortable.  Aukai finally settled and was facing the water.  Team R&B could see the line, the lead and pigtail, they estimate it could be about 4 feet.  They called it into NOAA directly and updated the volunteer.  Unfortunately Aukai left the site, and they spent the rest of the day trying to find her. I know they will be out first thing in the morning looking for her.  (*** if anyone does see her large female with an applied N13 bleach, please call it into the hotline. 808-220-7802).

One of the stops on the westside they found Kekoa Alii RK72 snoozing on the rocks.

Next stop at PC they were happy to find Kolohe RW22 hauled out on the rocks. He still has some rawness on his snout.

Still searching for Aukai everywhere they back tracked. Kekoa RK72 was still on the rocks but now RN14 Kalani was there with him.

Their last find of the day was Nalu R3CX on the rocks. The area had lots of folks fishing and now that someone broke the gate there were lots of people driving into the area.
