03/22/2021 Monday Monk Seal Dailies

Todays dailies are brought to you by yours truly and Team R&B💕.

I went to observe Rabbit Island today with Diane. We saw four seals on island while we watched between 11:45 and 1:30. They were all within 30 to 40 feet of each other by the 3BS. I will apologize I do not have any photos to include tonight due to technical stupidity on my part.

On the shoreline rocks Lanikai side of the 3BS was an unknown subadult. There was a seal there yesterday and it may be the same one except today it looked a little bigger. Light color belly, but could not determine sex and at one point I thought there was a tag but can not confirm.

Next there was Mom (Pua) and P01 right in front of the 3BS. They were mostly in snooze mode until

P01 attempted to nurse. Poor thing still trying to figure out how, but good news it finally latched on and got to eat. P01 did some flipper flapping and waving, and it "seems" there is a NB on LFF, but can not confirm. Pua rolled over at one point and blocked our line of sight.  Everything seems normal with Mom and P01.

There was a juvenile, light female belly, no tags was to the right of Mom and pup. This appears to be the same J/F as yesterday and pretty sure it is one of the 2020 kids. The J/F mostly slept with a couple of roll overs.

Team R&B started their day watching Kaale RH32 stealing fish. He was quite active and then poof he was gone. They never saw him for the rest of the day.

Team R&B hung around at a nearby beach watching people going after the dolphins, and hoping for Kaale or one of the buddies to haul out. Then the magic began when a seal comes in and hauls out, it was Kalani RN14. Then they noticed another seal in the water going back and forth. It finally came in and belted out a huge bark. It was their beloved Kekoa Alii RK72. He seemed agitated then came across the rocks in warp speed. There was a seal by him trying to come it, seems RN14 had entered the water and was trying to come back. Kekoa and Kalani had words, so Kalani left and went around the rocks and landed back where he had started.

They headed over to another westside location and found a seal on lower rocks. There was RL70 Leina, she is minty green and is aware of a fisherman near her.  Leina aware of the guy scurries over the rocks to the right still keeping her eye on the guy. Then Team R&B see another seal coming in where the fisherman had been. The seal is trying to haul up on the rocks and takes advantage of the surges and comes in. The fisher walks by and drops the small catch he had in his hand.  R3CU watches the man as he passes and very cautiously moved further away an turned on his side.  Team R&B watched R3CU and Leina for another 30 minutes and left the site.
