03/20/2021 Saturday Monk Seal Dailies

Todays dailies are brought to you by Marilyn and Team R&B💕  We do have some really big news but you just have to read through to see what it is!

Marilyn observed Rabbit Island from 11:20 to 1:10 pm. Initially Marilyn spotted five seals on shore until one of the larger critters had a pup with her. Yes you read that right we have PO1 first arrival on Oahu and seems like the first on the main island chain.  There is a really good chance but no way to confirm this is Pua RF34 who pupped last year.  She was due at the beginning of the month so it makes sense she it the mom.

The adult female was seen bellowing (having her mouth open several times) but it took Marilyn a little

bit to realize there was a pup there. There was a fair amount of chatter between mother and pup. The little one was very active and appears to have a NB on the tip of the LFF.

On the beach near the 3BX was an UJF, juvenile size, no tags and a very green female belly.

Near SRI was an U/M, adult size mottled gray male belly and unclear if there were tags.  SAF, subadult to adult size, light colored female belly and two tags.

Far out on rocky right beach was L9, juvenile size an applied upside down underlined L9 bleach on the left shoulder. This is one of the 2020 Molokai pups that pops up on Rabbit Island from time to time.

Later in the day Marilyn stopped by a beach on the east side when she was on her way home. There was an adult female on the beach and Marilyn is reasonable sure this is R016 Right Spot based on the natural bleach on her right side. She was covered in sand making most of her markers hard to see.

Very early this morning Team R&B found Kaale RH32 foraging in the outfall. They couldn't stay so they gave the hotline a call. They let the hotline line know there was a good chance Kaale would head for tracks and there were currently lots of fishermen and campers already out there.

Team R&B were with junior sealette when they got a call of a seal hauling out at KoOlina . They called the hotline to inform. When they arrived they found Aukai RL12in a nice zone set up by the security folks. Aukai is looking quite large.

Next stop they found RN14 Kalani in a sound sleep on the rocks at a west side haul out. While observing him they saw a seal hauling out at tracks. The people on shore immediately went up to him. Team R&B quickly headed over and called the hotline.   When they arrived they found Kaale RH32 was on shore and a volunteer had just arrived.

Last stop for them was at the bay and they were so happy to find R3CX Nalu resting on the rocks. He was very nice to be in a position and showed his tags.
