04/09/2022 Saturday's Dailies

Todays dailies are brought to you by Marilyn and Team R&B💕

Marilyn viewed Rabbit Island from 2:25 to 3:15 pm and only saw one seal on island during this time.
Between 3BS and SRI behind waterfront rocks was an unknown/unidentified. There was no way to determine gender, size, or tags. Its probably a juvenile to subadult size, but that's all Marilyn can speculate.

Team R&B started at the outfall and saw a seal foraging, and thought
there might be a line coming from its mouth. The seal ended up hauling out at a beach close by. They went to see and there was a line and a hook in the right corner of its mouth. They ID'd L7 and couldn't see how long the line was.
Then two dogs arrived, with the owner tossing a ball. The dogs went over to the seal area, L7 became aware of the dogs, turned quickly and sped back into the water.
They called it into the hotline letting them know about the hook and line.

After picking up junior sealette they went back to look for L7 and he had landed again. A volunteer was there, so Team R&B showed them the photo of the hook and line going from its mouth wrapping around his shoulders.

Next they spotted RN14 Kalani from afar. A friend of theirs put signs out which is helpful on this busy beach.  They got to the site and posse pal was there with Kalani RN14.  They called the hotline again.

Team R&B headed to another west side location and there was an adult seal. It was RH32 Kaale resting in the shallows.

After finding Kaale they headed over to the bay and first found RL20 Kalua on the rocks snoozing.
Then they saw Nalu R3CX and RH76 Kala.  Nalu definitely has some type of wound as he was resting in the pond they could see blood.  Being the male that he is, he was still after Kala even while being injured.  He was on his belly watching out for her. When he turned Team R&B could see the blood flowing from his penile area. It was actually shocking to see all the blood.
They called the hotline and NOAA.  Then they called Melina directly in that she's in the area.
They stayed to observe, he wasn't struggling nor did he seem uncomfortable. They noticed he had a lump about the size of a grapefruit in the same area, and it appears the blood is coming from it.
As they collected photos they sent them in.
To add insult to injury a couple of young guys came by getting close to Nalu and taking selfies. Team R&B asked them to move that the seal was injured and to be respectful. Seems the punks were mouthing off and walking towards the seal, so Melina called the cops.
When the cops arrived they thought the seal was dead, so they filled the cop in he was alive and injured. The cop called NOAA, as had Team R&B.  A volunteer arrived after 3 pm.
Melina and Team R&B left tired and disappointed, such a hard situation.
