Melody got word from a friend this morning that there were a couple of seals on the North Shore. So of course Melody decided to go check it out. When she arrived she was hoping the seals would cooperate and give her some clue as to who they were. Initially she wasn't able to tell if they were male or female because of their position. After an hour a couple of volunteers arrived and they weren't able to ID the seals.
Finally Melody could see they were both females, and with much determination after a long while one of them gave a flipper flex. The larger of the two tag read K81. Melody called the hotline to report K80.
Then the smaller seal finally gave a flipper flex and showed her pink tag. Melody called the hotline once again and they told her it was RL98 Lina. Apparently she's been seen in the area on and off over the past week or so.
Melody headed out shortly after feeling happy she was able to see K80 again and got to meet little RL98.
Marilyn viewed Rabbit Island from 10:30 to 11:50 and there was only one seal. The adult male A/M was there and appears to have competed his molt. He originally was up in the dunes near the cliff. He made his way down making his new coat and male belly visible.
Team R&B watch a seal foraging and doing 7 minute dives at the bay. The seal was Kala RH76 who ended up landed and stayed on the rocks for the rest of the day. She remained alone.
Nalu R3CX was out there foraging forever. Team R&B left and returned later in the day. They found Nalu had hauled out on the rocks to the right.
Team R&B arrived at tracks to find R407 Kawika on shore. He is 70% into his molt. Along withKawika was Kaale RH32 and Lefty RG28. They boys had a fight/play session broke out. R407 made his way to the water with Kaale and Lefty. They went at it for about 20 minutes. R407 hauled out alone, guess since he's still molting, he wasn't into playing.
Then there were six women running down with their cell phones towards the seals. Team R&B called out to stop, five did and one continued because she wanted a few photos of them. Team R&B notified the hotline. Melina came by and was filled in, so she went over to talk with the women.
Sadly when that one woman approached to get her photos all three seals took off. Kaale, never returned but R407 cautiously hauled out with Lefty. The two settled in and Team R&B left the site.
At another nearby site they were happy to find Kekoa Alii RK72. Once again he was alone on the rocks basking in the sun.
Lastly as they were driving around they spotted an unusual site. There high up in the rocks was a seal snoozing. Turns out little RP30 Puka thinks he is part goat, he looked so odd being so high up.
