I also got an email from monk seal enthusiast Connie who spotted a bathing beauty on the beach east of elbow beach and west of james campbell on Wednesday. Not sure who this beauty is, and I will rely on the eagle eyes and experience, of Lesley, Team Billand and Marilyn. Thank you Connie for sharing !!!
Team T&D (Tammy and Dave) did Ka'ena point today. Their only find today was Squinty R330 and RL42 Leia. They were hanging out together just past 10 min beach.
Team Billand while out on their daily check spotted two seals foraging and doing 6 minute dives by Campbells. They were able to ID Kolohe RW22 by his applied bleach. (THANK YOU NOAA)
The other seal is being reported as an U/U. The critter had a darker coat but they were unable to get an ID.
Team Billand next find was RW02 PvKauai on shore at a westside haul out. There were lots of rocks from the big waves. They called into the hotline, and left to check other beaches.
They did return a little later and NOAA was on site to bleach the seal on shore. Unfortunately RW02 was too alert and was not cooperative.
Next stop Team Billand spotted two seals upon arrival. On the lower rocks was RN14 Kalani. The second seal was to the right side close to the waters edge. They were able to ID Lei Ola RH48. She was being washed over by the waves, but she didn't care, just stayed and slept. At one point she got washed over by the waves, but she came right back up in the same spot.
NOAA was notified and Mark came down to bleach, but since Lei Ola was getting washed over she was not a good candidate. Mark did bleach Kalani RN14, with a N14 to left side and another bleach on hind area. N14 was not disturbed and slept away.
When Team Billand returned later in the day for their last check there was another seal. Much to their surprise the third critter who was near Kalani N14, had an N6 applied bleach showing. It was
Kawena RH36 looking healthy and quite a fine female. She was on lower rocks by Kalani. Lei Ola was still on site but all the way to the right.
They found the last critter of the day before they headed for their Ka'ena West Trek. They spotted red tape blocking something off and they got curious. There was da Benny RE74 close to the water line.
Unfortunately there were footprints right up to him. When they returned from their Ka'ena trek Benny was no longer there and equipment was gone.
