Jan 6, 2018 Monk Seal Dailies:

Todays dailies are brought to you by Team Billand, Marilyn and Lesley.

Lesley sent a quick update stating that there had been a lot of commotion in front of the house, from fishermen, friends and family letting her know there was a seal. She went down to check and ID'd Ka'ena RO40. It's the second time this week he hauled out right out front.  ( I think Ka'ena is making life just a little easier for her).

Team Billand were checking all the beaches along the south west side and didn't see anything until nimitz. One of the fishermen commented to them that a friend of theirs was just there.... so they went looking and spotted a seal hauling out on the rocks. It was Pohaku R028, all her markers clearly visible.

Next stop for Team Billand was where they found the party of five. First to be recognized RW02 PvKauai, and RIP RR70, the two stayed together all day.
The next two to be ID'd was Kaale RH32 and Kekoa RK72. At first Ka'ale was below Kekoa, then he galumphed down in the water, over to right and landed on Upper Rocks. In late afternoon Ka'ale moved to PvKauai side and went to sleep. Kekoa was still in his water hole on upper rocks.
While Team Billand was frantically IDing all four critters, a 5th seal arrived. There he was Kalani RN14 and he galumphed up on the rocks, looked at the others and stayed on his own. He later went in the water hole on lower rocks.
It's good to see him back, since he hasn't been in the neighborhood for a bit. He is looking healthy and back with the boys.

Marilyn viewed Rabbit Island from about 12:30 til 3 pm.  She spotted six seal on the island and was only able to ID one.  ( I know what this is feels like).
Seal #1 - unknown adult located on the rocks to the Lanikai side of Left Point Beach. Adult size, but lighter ventral side, two tags and unknown sex.
Seal #2 - unknown juvenile female, initially located in a dip on Left Point Beach. Juvenile size, brownish coat, light female belly with some green. This is probably either RK37 or RK38. Marilyn did not see the natural bleach on the left rear side, but did not have a good view.
Seals 3,4,&5 were all in a group about 80 feet towards Lanikai from the 1BS.  Seal #3 adult male older coat, two tags and no other ID.
Seal #4 - sub adult female, two tags. Marilyn looked but there were no applied bleach marks visible.
Seal #5 - R1KT was ID'd by subadult size, lighter male belly and partial CC scar on left ventral side and 2 tags.
Seal #6 - unknown, unknown seal located about 50 feet Makapuu side of the 3BS behind the waterfront rocks. Marilyn only had a view of the seals head and rear, so she never got a view to estimate the size.
