I'll start by saying that I had the pleasure to meet up with some dear friends today as we all went to visit the big October surprise. If you haven't heard yet another pup was born on Oahu, making this pup number 12. It's mom is BG R303 who to the best of anyone's knowledge hasn't given birth on Oahu.
According to DB's old data sheets R303 BG was first seen on Oahu at Ka'ena Point back in January of 2007. He later nicknamed her BG for "Benny's Girl". There were times when BG also meant Big Girl.
Overall today was a wonderful day reminding me how grateful I am, that I have such a wonderful monk seal ohana. (both animal and human 😊)
Tammy met up with Lesley and they made it out to the point. It was a slow seal day, but a surprising one. Their first find RL47 Kamakana, he was born on Rabbit Island back in 2019. He was resting on the shore.
Their only other find which was another surprise was RS32. They were delighted to see Kaimana's 2023 little girl. This is their first time seeing her in the area.
Tammy noted the Wedgies are getting their adult feathers.
Team R&B started their day at Pokai where they first found the unknown male they been seeing lately. He was molting by the grassy area in the morning. Later he moved to the small pond where he spent the rest of the day.
While checking on him they heard the bellowing a seal. Once again it was RL20 Kalua vocalizing off the rocks. Shortly after he left to rest-camp.
They headed over to rest- camp where they found multiple seals foraging in the water. Once again a challenge but with patience andpersistence they were able to ID the following:
RH48 Lei Ola foraging with two males
RL20 Kalua who was all over the place
R3CX Nalu who followed Miss Lei Ola the whole time, along with RL20.
Along with the seals they spotted an amazing Iwa Bird.
They also saw the dolphins busy playing way off shore.
