04/18/2021 Sunday Monk Seal Dailies

Today's dailies are brought to you by Marilyn and Team R&B💕.

Marilyn checked all of the southeast spots this morning and only found a seal at spitting cave.
It was between 8:45 and 10:05 that she saw a seal doing 9-11 minute dives.  She determined the seal is an adult to subadult size, and she is reasonably sure it has 3 tags. The seal appears to have a scar across its right eye and another scar above and behind the right eye.  Seal was reported as a U/A. UPDATE: this seal has been ID'd as RG32 based on his facial scars and he only has two tags.

Marilyn viewed Rabbit Island from 11:30 to 1:45 and was joined by Tony Q and his drone. There were

only three seals on island today.

RF34 Pua and P01 spent much of the time partially hidden by waterfront rocks about 30 feet Lanikai side of the 3BS. Then at some point the pup entered there water and Mom temporarily lost sight of the pup. Then were soon reunited and both went for a swim when Marilyn lost sight of them.

About 40 feet Makapuu side of the 3BS was an (UJ) unknown juvenile size, yellowish possible male belly. Perhaps Tony's drone photos will give a closer look. There might have been an applied bleach on left side or just sand. Good chance this is one of the 2020 kids. Update based closer look of photos the L9 bleach was visible and this would be Molokai 2020 male that has been seen around Oahu for a few months.

Team R&B arrived early and found a seal in the bay area, foraging close to the row boats. After taking a close look at the photos they ID'd R3CS natural beach on the left side of his head.

Their next stop at a west side location they were surprised and upset to see so many fishers still in the area. Looks like many had spent the night.   On lower rocks was an alert R3CU alone. He was aware of the people around him. For the time being he seems okay, lets hope it stays that way.

Team R&B arrived at tracks and found RG28 Lefty alone, with four signs up around him. They stuck

around for an hour or more to see if any more seals would arrive, but no luck today.   Later in the afternoon they saw a second seal with Lefty from a distance. They did not get to the site again.

While out looking for seals they were thrilled to find their buddy Kaale RH32 is back home and resting on the rocks alone. His applied N7 was visible although it looks more like N4. He is looking fat and healthy, no signs of hooks or new markers.

Team R&B got a frantic call from a friend about a seal on shore at Lani's. When they arrive there was a man sitting with the seal RW22 Kolohe who was alert. He then moved to the water and went to the rocks. People started to run over to the seal, Team R&B did their best to call out to them to keep their distance. Auntie was very upset with a couple who were going close to Kolohe.

Lastly they returned to check on R3CU but he was gone. They did spot a little seal below by lower rocks. They ID'd RL70 Leina, who was okay even with all the fishers on the rocks  and cleaning their catch.  She appears to be fine, no sign of hooks and is looking healthy.
