04/10/2021 (part 2) Saturday Ka'ena Point Update

We had a very busy day out here, it was KPtSP official survey day. Marilyn and Diane did the point and will send their seal sightings report. I was back and forth all day.

Early this morning I documented a seal that turned out to be RE74 Benny. He left and later when we checked again he was hauled out in a deep sleep

Marilyn's update:
Diane and I joined Lesley and a number of folks from the Department of State Parks to participate in
a survey of visitors to Ka'ena Point today. Diane and I were assigned to the NAR while Lesley had duties throughout the state park.  Diane and I were in the NAR from about 10 am to 12:30 pm.

We found two HMS on the runway when we arrived. The two HMS were RO40 Ka'ena (Id'd by his male belly, dorsal pit scar and the line scar on the base of his RFF) and RW02 PVKauai (Id'd by his male belly, small dorsal pit scar and his W76/W77 tags). At some point I realized that RW02 had left the runway. Not much later we saw a seal doing his hippo impression in the pool outside the main pool. I was never able to ID that seal. Then as we were hiking out we saw a seal hauling out onto the sand in Ka'ena's pool and the tags showed us that this was again RW02.

Before leaving KP we checked Lyman's Beach and found an adult male seal with no tags. The seal also had a nb on the mid left side. We believe this is R407. Correction it wasn't 407 but da Benny!
