Marilyn viewed Rabbit Island from 11:35 to 12:45 and there were 8 seals during her observation.
Since there were so many and there wasn't much movement Marilyn labeled them by number.
Close to the cliff at LPB was Seal 1: subadult to adult size, tannish coat, unknown gender.
On the 1BS side of LPB was Seal 2: subadult to adult size, gray male belly, and unsure about tags.
Slightly Makapuu side of 1BS was Seal 3: juvenile size, older coat, two red tags and possibly male belly.
Between 1BS & 2BS was Seal 4: subadult to adult size, darker gray belly, unsure about gender and no visible tags.
Originally in a group of four seal on the waterfront by 3BS were:
Seal 5: subadult size, two red tags. unknown gender, but there appeared to be a scar on right reat side, so it could be RK24.
Seal 6: subadult to adult size, two red tags, unknown gender.
Seal 7: larger juvenile to subadult size, two red tags. This seal went up into the dunes which made it difficult to see.
Seal 8: adult size, yellowish tan female belly and two red tags.
Team R&B did their usual search and came up empty. They checked the next area and found some boys near the seals. To make it worse the father was there taking a photo of them. The seals started moving and barking at the boys. The kids got scared and moved on.
There was RG28 Lefty with RN14 Kalani were the two on the beach. The signs were in the bushes and broken. Seems the rough tide got the best of them. They called the hotline.
Team R&B made a zone real quick for the two seals. The seals settled in, as the tourist were out and about. They educated the many that were out this morning. Team R&B had a good time chatting with several tourist today. Its nice when the tourist are interested and appreciative.
A volunteer arrived at 11:15 and Team R&B filled him in on the seals and the signs.
When they arrived they found the lovely Aukai RL12 in a great zone thank you Security. The Security guard asked them if they knew the seal. Team R&B were thrilled to fill him in on Aukai. Then the guard said he remembered them from over the years always educating people. Big mahalos to KoOlina security team!
Then they got a call from a friend of a seal just hauling out at white plains. They were convinced they would find good ole Rocky there but when they arrived they got a surprise.
There was a large female snoozing in a zone set up by the life guards, and it was NOT Rocky the seal had tags. Finally got a look at the tags H92, it's NALANI from Kauai. She a trooper for sure, once bitten by a dog, given antibiotic shot, got bit by a shark, and hooked at a young age.
She gave birth this past year on Oahu. Needless to say Team R&B were over the moon to see her again. They called her into the hotline.
