Todays dailies are brought to you by Lesley, Marilyn and Team R&B💕. Lesley's weekly Ka'ena update is part two of the dailies. There is a lot to catch up on and some new critters in the neighborhood.
Marilyn was out early this morning to run some errands. On her way back home she spotted a seal at one of the beaches. It was before 8 am and she had perishables in the car so she could not stay, but she did stop. The was quickly ID'd as R016 Right Spot by her adult size, large chest scar and her female belly and no tags. She may have overnight it at the beach. Marilyn did call into the hotline. Marilyn did plan to return but never got a chance.
Marilyn viewed Rabbit Island from noon to 2:15 and there were a total of six seals on island today. When Marilyn arrived some of the workers at the pier they had seen three seals swimming in the area at the end of the pier. Yesterday, the security guys at the pier told her they has seen a tiger shark swimming near the pier. Not a good.
Along with all the updates from the personnel Marilyn immediately noticed the Sooty Terns have landed on Rabbit Island. She did not see them yesterday, but sometime between then and now they have landed in the thousands.
There were a group of four seals near the 1BS. They moved amongst each other, which made it a bit confusing.
U/A: adult size, unknown gender, at least one tag on RRF.
A/M: large adult size, darker gray male belly, at least one tag on RRF.
S/M: juvenile to subadult size, light gray male belly and two tags.
S/F: subadult size, light yellow female belly and two tags.
At Middle Cliff there was a J/F: juvenile size, light yellow female belly and two tags. She started down low on the rocks then moved up higher. Later she would go down to the rocks, then back up.
Down from the 3BS was a J/M: juvenile size, light gray male belly and no tags.
Team R&B saw a lot of seals today. At one site they saw RN14 hauled out on the rocks along withKekoa Alii RJ72. Next there was RG28 Lefty also on the rocks. They watched as R407 Kawika foraging forever, then finally hauling out.
Over at tracks they saw a seal hauling up, they ID'd R3CX Nalu. While with Nalu they saw people running with cell phones in hand at another beach close by. They hurried over to discover it was Kaale RH32, looking FAT and healthy.
At another west side location they found RH76 Kala was on the rocks alone. She was peacefully resting away from the boys.
Checking another west side site that has been very muddy since all the rain. No seals have been there, but that changed today. They found RL42 Leia along with RL70 Leina. Both were in a tiny pond snoozing.
Team R&B notices a huge fishing line on the rocks, looks to be 150 test. They looked over both seals carefully and although the line was very close to L42's hind flippers it does not appeared to be attached.
