12/05/2021 Sunday Monk Seal Dailies

Todays dailies are brought to you by Marilyn and Team R&B💕

Marilyn viewed Rabbit Island from 12:10 to 1:10 and there were three seals on Island today. The weather was overcast and high surf. It was amazing to see the transformation of the beaches between Saturday and Sunday.
The molting male (MM) was fairly high in the dunes by the 1BS. There still appears to be patches of old fur in his mid dorsal area. He looks to be about 95% molted.
A short distance Makapuu of MM was a S/F down on the eroded beach. Subadult size, gray female belly and Marilyn wasn't sure about tags.
Makapuu side of the 3BS was an U/S: subadult size, light belly, not sure about gender or tags. Based on coloration, this may be the seal Marilyn referred to as S/M yesterday that might be RK24.

Team R&B first got to tracks there were four wallows, all separate locations. There were no seals, lots of human footprints. Shame as it looked like the seal was run off. They waited and waited, hoping one seal would haul in.
Waiting paid off, they spotted a male coming in very cautiously. It was Kaale RH32. He landed up close to the greenery, played with a stick, then rolled on his side for a cold, chilly, rainy nap.

Team R&B continued to stay with Kaale waiting/hoping his buddies would show up. Then there were two seals playing further to the right in the water.
It took them a while, both R407 Kawika and RG28 Lefty finally hauled out. They chose to stay farther to the right away from people.

Heading over to the outfall they saw two seals foraging wildly as the surf was big. One seal they ID'd as R3CX Nalu by his natural bleach spot on his left face.  Then they lost sight of him for the day.
The next seal came in foraging fast, it was RN14 Kalani. He left the outfall but about 30 minutes later he hauled out with RH32 Kaale. (his bosom buddy)

Team R&B did see another seal in the outfall and it also left. There was so much debris floating in the water. They ID'd Kekoe RK72, when at one point he dove right in the middle of the foamy water and debris.
They later found him on the rocks resting.
