12/18/2021 Saturday Monk Seal Dailies

Todays dailies are brought to you by Melody and Team R&B💕.  Marilyn messaged me that she did not make it to the pier today and yesterday there were no seals on island. We'll see what tomorrow brings.

Melody got a text from a friend this morning that a seal was hauling out at a west side beach. Melody couldn't go until afternoon so she called the hotline to inform. She was told a volunteer wasn't able to go because of new covid restrictions. ( ???)  Anyway Melody let her friend know that no one was able to come out, so her stayed with the seal.  As they were talking her friend said "Oh my" her comes another seal. The new seal slowly made its way almost to the shore looking at the seal that just hauled out. There was some vocalizing, and the new seal decided to make its way around the jetty and haul out at the next cove over.
Melody was able to make it out to the beach early afternoon.  Melody ID'd the first seal that hauled out
as RH92 Nalani. The 2nd seal that snorted had found her way to the other cove was our girl Rocky RH58.  Melody called the hotline again to inform them of the two seals and their ID.
The two girls were still resting on the beach about 30 feet apart when Melody left at sunset. The beach was somewhat busy and there were several visitors thrilled to see two seals together. For the most part everyone was respectful.

Team R&B started their day spotting a big boy up on the rocks. It was RN14 Kalani who hardly moved at all. They saw his chipped tag today.
While there they saw Santa passing by in a coast guard chopper.  I guess Santa spends a lot of time on the islands before he makes his annual trip around the world.

Team R&B studying the water saw something, sure enough it was a seal swimming past them. The seal went around and hauled up on the rocks. It was R3CX Nalu.
Then they saw an animal trying to land on the rocks by Nalu R3CX. Nalu wasn't happy and postured with his objection. The seal was Kekoa Alii RK72 went all the way around the rocks, hauled out with the help of a wave. He galumphed up where he usually goes to bask in the sun.

From afar they saw an animal hauling up on shore at tracks. They eventually made their way over and saw it was RH32 Kaale. He was visited by some folks.

At another west side location they saw a smaller seal on lower rocks. It was RL70 Leina! She looks a bit thinner but okay, and was settled in.
Above her on high rocks was another smaller seal, it was, RL20 Kalua!  They got a look at his tag when he finally moved on his side.  This kid is exploring all kinds of new territory.
Way up to the right was another seal basking in the sun. They ID'd RG28 Lefty.
