Marilyn viewed Rabbit Island from 11:05 to 1:30 and there were three seals on island today. Weather conditions were generally sunny with passing clouds (no rain).
Initially in the dunes near the 3BS was a subadult female who later moved down near the water. It was a little difficult viewing her because a kayak with divers anchored in front of her.
S/F - juvenile to subadult size, two tags, light female belly and a small dark patch on her lower left neck area.
RK37 Huia (RB12 Sadies' pup born on RI May 2018). Subadult size, female belly, two tags and a nb on her lower left size.
RK24 Wawamalu/Bruno (RK96 Kaiwi's pup born in April 2018). Subadult size, lighter male belly, two tags and a small scar on his right mid size.
Looks like RK24 is a bit smaller than RK37.
Team R&B was happy to find R407 Kawika on shore once again. Its nice to have him hanging out, and they know soon he'll be on his way chasing the chicks.
One of the homeless guys told them to mind his mess, Team R&B explained that they were there to check on the seal. Which he replies Oh! the bugga here everyday.
It looked like R407 took off by 11, even when they checked from a distance.
Junior sealette was with Team R&B on the jetty looking for critters, enjoying the sunshine and sea breeze, Rob shouted out SEAL! They looked down and the seal who was id'd as Nalu R3CX swam pass, heading towards a crowded area. They watched, he was looking to haul out right where two big dogs were playing. Thankfully he moved on.
Nalu then passed some swimmers who had no idea he was there. Then Nalu headed for the area where lots of tents, people, and fishing poles. Holding their breathe they waited and the bugga went and hauled out right in front of the fishers. No one bothered him, even though he was right there near them.
Team R&B called the hotline to inform.
The fishers rechecked their lines, put live bait and tossed the line out with Nalu right there. But Nalu did not move, he did nothing thank goodness.
Team R&B headed out to another site and found a huge female on shore near the waters edge. There were signs and ropes up, but she was outside the zone. They ID'd RL12 Aukai, auntie said she had been there yesterday, left and then came back. She was worried about the signs. Team R&B assured Auntie not to worry, as they made the adjustments and talked with people as they walked by. They did their best to educate people but it got busy so they called the hotline.
Aukai is looking fat, healthy and gorgeous. When they first saw her, it reminded them of Pohaku, she is missed but forever a part of our seal ohana.
The crowds thinned, so they left hoping a volunteer would come by.
