Dogs come to visit M and M every single day. Today these two dogs came close to going into the perimeter. We held them back with our arms out and trying to change their minds. They rolled in the seals wallows that are all over the Kalaeloa Beach area. Both dogs pooped near site to our disgust. We spoke to owner who was very respectable and was trying to make the dogs stop, but THEY WERENT LISTENING!!!! THE MAN DID PICK UP BOTH POOPS, put both dogs back in the car and we had a really nice conversation. But I only sent the photo to show, what M got to face DAILY out there.
And the small kid in front of M and m...was yelling at her, M and M was whooping over and over. We asked kid to stop, he didnt and M was ready to leap. We got kid back, made zone larger. M and M keeps moving left, and being we are doing multiple seals in one day alone...we get back to her and she is right near the poles. It gives us a heart attack every single day.
And folks love to sleep with the seal...pretty much REGULARLY. She been at Kalaeloa for 25 days already and doesnt seem ready to leave.
Night time, she moves all the way up...HIGH UP...We have to tuck her in, every night...hope no one hurts her or harasses her...but they do any ways.
Seeing Rocky was nice, as she dont come our side much lately...She used to come to windsock before years ago. Benny and Kermit always had a big fight over her and Irma.
Yep, soon Kermit will return and the brawls will begin. Guess he is having one super great...Vacation on Niihau. Wait till he comes back and see all the people and DOGS he has to face.
Pohaku is always at Secrets, very early morning...we set up as fast as we can so she has a nice perimeter. We stay as long as we can, or, until another volunteer can monitor her. Diane has been a great sitter, as there are hundreds of visitors all day long. Not fun in the scorching heat!!! No restroom near by..got to walk to Lagoon one all the time. No shade...all sun...Blazing sun till sun sets...incredible heat.
And to add to that, DISNEY has blocked Lagoon 1A, so we all have to walk from Lagoon 1B, AND PARK OUT THAT WAY. Nice walk every day.
Also want to thank Miss Linda S. for her early early morning calls and reports of Pohaku at Secrets. We appreciate her hard work with the seals. She lives out there, can be on the scene in minutes.
She cant stay, she has health issues with the sun...and we understand. God bless YOU, Miss Linda.
KoOlina...its a place of Joy said Herbert Horita, Many years ago. It is a place of JOY with our monk seals hauling out to rest. But we all need to keep responding to keep the seals protected. We all need to pull together, take shifts when asked per Dana. No one person can handle these daily haul outs at KoOlina..it isnt fair. Our seals deserve a place to rest, even if it is...at KoOlina. The seals came all along, before the resorts were built..now they keep coming as ITS ALL THEY KNOW. I believe, each seal has the right to go wherever they want..and they need our protection, they need for us to educate all the tourists that visit our Islands. And the visitors need to understand, THEY CAN NOT JUST GO UP TO A SEAL, TO PET or photograph a seal up close and personal. Just NOT RIGHT.
I guess seals keep entering the lagoons as it is an atmosphere of beauty, a place to rest and relax.'
Perhaps a place of security in each lagoon that the seals like. Just all the seals got to deal with....HUMANS, EVERY DAY.
