Marilyn viewed Rabbit Island from 2:35 to 4:05 and there were a total of four seals today, but not what you think. It appears PO6 has been weaned. The other big news today was Rocky RH58 pupped today at Kaimana Beach today. Oh Rocky not again!!
When Marilyn first arrived she only saw one seal in the Middle cliff area. S/M: subadult size, tannish green male belly and two red tags. The seal has a lower lip scar which would suggest this is RK24 Wawamalu/Bruno.
About 3:05, MO7 and PO7 hauled out in the middle of LPB. They had been having a swim session. Not long after they hauled out PO7 nursed and then crawled behind MO7 where it was mostly hidden. PO7 is plumping up nicely.
Marilyn searched up and down the coastline for MO6 & PO6. Finally about 3:25, PO6 hauled out alone from one of the surge channels on the Lanikai side of LPB. PO6 then galumphed up the beach and mouthed some items on the beach. Then PO6 went back into the water and hauled out again about 20 minutes later. So from the looks of it PO6 appears to be a weaner at 33 days old. PO6 seems to be much smaller than most weaners from the past.
Interesting note: PO6 was born on the 6th of June, PO7 born on the 7th of June. PO8 born the 9th of July.... Just one day off. Well we know Rocky never makes it easy, like going to Kauai to give birth!
Team R&B started early with junior sealette and saw a pod of dolphins having fun again. They pulled over to watch for a bit.
They also found RL08 snoozing. He was alone on the rocks hidden away. When they checked again later RL08 was gone, but the dolphins were still there further out.
At another beach further west they were happy to find Nalu R3CX. He was alone on shore between all the fishing poles lined up. All was good, until they watched some folks getting really close for their photo that will probably show up on social media.
Before their Ka'ena West Trek they came across RL42 Leia and RH32 Kaale. The two have been together for a couple of days in the same spot. Seems they get along really well. But it was pointed out they are actually brother and sister Nihoa was there mom.
The two was still there when Team R&B returned from their KW trek.
So once again they made the long hike out to Ka'ena West all the way to the whale rock and had no seals, zero, zilch!
After their hike they stopped to get some water and sit to look at the ocean, when they noticed below them was a seal. A cute, fat, green seal that they were too familiar with. They spent the time studying the seal as it got cozy between the rocks, and it didn't have any tags. However it did have a cc scar on the right fore flipper, and a possible applied bleach. Then they realized it was RL98 Lina. Its been a while since they have seen her, she is looking good.
The big news today was Rocky giving birth to PO8 at Kaimana Beach. It's been all over social media since early today. Melody was kind enough to share some of her photos with us. What's really cool is PO8 has a natural bleach like her momma. We all know what a wonderful mother Rocky is, and of course Rocky does what she wants, where she wants. We have some photos and a video of Day 1. Stay tune for more to come.
