09/24/2021 Friday Monk Seal Dailies

Today's dailies are brought to you by Lesley, Team T&D and Team R&B๐Ÿ’•   Lesley's Ka'ena update is part two of the dailies.

Team T&D are on Big Island for some R&R.  Which means they are relaxing while looking for seals. Their first find today was RK26 Manu'iwa, 2018 female. This is RA20's daughter.

After lunch they went looking for more seals. They first found a honu on the rocks. Then they found a molting R8HE, with a very cool sign informing the public.

Team R&B decided to try something new this morning and started in the opposite direction.  At the

outfall they spot a seal going for broke eating fish on his own. It was Lefty RG28, he was awesome chasing and catching fish all over the place. He went to the right, to the left out of the outfall and then back in. Even the fishers enjoyed watching him, and I am sure thankful he was stealing their catch.  Later in the morning RG28 was seen on shore at tracks. There was one sign up per a good Samaritan.  I believe it was the same woman who helped out yesterday.  Then Team R&B spotted another seal, a green one in the water. The seal didn't land so they didn't stay long enough to ID it.

Team R&B returned to tracks a little bit later and there was the green seal trying to haul out to rest. The beach had lots of visitors on shore, some running towards the seal. Finally the seal came on shore. It was RH32 Kaale hauled up and stayed on shore. He is very green. Unfortunately three guys thought it was a good idea to walk right up to him.

Next stop they found RL20 Kalua foraging out of the bay on ocean side. Later they found him hauled out on the rocks. Still very green and no sign of molting yet.

Team R&B got a text from one of their Ohana who saw tourist up close and personal with a seal resting on shore. They hurried to the site, but by the time they arrived the folks were gone. The seal R3CX Nalu was agitated but still on shore. He was up close to the rocks, moved up some and looking around. Nalu's molt is about 20% . Now that the weekend is here hope people will just leave him alone and let him rest.
