09/12/2021 Sunday Monk Seal Dailies

Today's dailies are brought to you by Marilyn and Team R&B💕

Marilyn viewed Rabbit Island from 11:30 to 2 pm and there were four seals on island during her observation.  Just hauling out on LPB when she arrived was a J/F. Juvenile size, old coat with lots of green, green female belly and no tags. Marilyn believes this is the same critter as yesterdays' UJ2. Once again she thinks this is one of the 2020 pups.

At the 1BS side of LPB was an U/J. Juvenile size, new coat, 2 tags, no nb on LFF, unsure of sex. This could be the same seal that was ID'd as the JM yesterday. At 11:36 an AM hauled out to the UJ. The adult size, dark male belly, old coat, and one tag on the RRF.

At the 3BS was an SAM, subadult adult size, male belly. He spent awhile at the 3BS area and about 12:30 he left and a short time later hauled out to the 1BS area. He interacted with the UJ and AM. About 1:30 the SAM entered the water with the AM close behind.  Shortly after the SAM hauled out alone between the 1BS and 2BS. The AM returned to the 1BS area where he hauled out. He was visited by both the J/F and U/J.

Team R&B arrived at the bay to check and there was a lot of human activity, lots of kayaks fishing. They spotted the green boy swimming between the boats. On their afternoon check RL20 Kalua was still at it foraging between the boats.

Next they found RL42 Leia snoozing on the rocks at an another west side location. She was alone resting peacefully and looking just fine.

Team R&B made their hike out to Ka'ena West and was very happy to find two seals. The two seals were going at it, playing like kids in the water. They immediately saw the applied bleach number on RP30 Puka.  The adult male took them a little longer but after studying him they recognized RN14 Kalani. They saw his nb spot on the right side, which is turning green.  The boys played/fought for at least 15 to 20 minutes, which is always amazing to watch. It made Team R&B's day!

Then RN14 decided to take off and so did the little fat boy RP30. Team R&B took off trying to keep up with them, but lost sight of both seals.   But on their way back they found RP30 Puka in his small shallow water, fast a sleep and alone.
