07/31/2021 Saturday Monk Seal Dailies

Today's dailies are brought to you by Marilyn and Team R&B💕

Team R&B are ending the month with a very quiet seal day, with a total of three critters all day. They started their day at 6 am at the bay. They did see a seal briefly swimming about, then they lost sight of it. They went back later and the area was packed with people.

At another west side location they saw RH76 Kala alone and hidden in the rocks. Her shark bite wounds are looking pink but healing. She was the only seal seen there today, away from the boys. There were lots of fishermen in the area.

After lots of looking and disappointment they were happy to find one more seal. There was Kaale

RH32 snoozing alone. He is another one that is very very green, hopefully molting coming soon. He is looking good, nothing out of the ordinary.

Marilyn viewed Rabbit Island from 11:55 to 1:45 and there were four seals on island during Marilyn's watch. In the back of LPB next to the rock flats was an U/U. This seal was mostly hidden behind the rocks and only showed part of its ventral. The ventral was very light and Marilyn would guess this to be RL37 but she could not see any definitive markers.

Nearer the rock flats was an A/F adult size, lighter gray female belly, new coat, and two tags. Not far from her was a seal labeled unknown subadult (U/S) Subadult size, old coat, 2 tags and yellowish belly.

Initially closer to the 1BS part of LPB was a S/F subadult size, female belly, partly molted and two tags. The molt looks to be about 35%, mostly on the belly. She moved around a lot between the unknown subadult.

July 31, 2021 Happy Birthday Rocky RH58

07/30/2021 Friday Monk Seal Dailies

Today's dailies are brought to you by Team R&B💕.

They started out at the bay watching a seal swimming back and forth, until he came up to the corner of the jetty. The seal hauled up cautiously, it was RW22 Kolohe. A fisherman walked on the wall, Kolohe got nervous and turned to leave. He continue to swim in the area.  RW22 went all the way to the right swam behind a swimmer for the longest time. By 9:15 he finally landed to the right of the "rest camp" by the first jetty. Team R&B called the hotline right away. They did a recheck on Kolohe a little bit later and a volunteer was on site.

Team R&B did spot another seal swimming around in the bay by the jetty. It was little Mr. green RL20 Kalua. He never landed and they were happy to see him, but after hours they headed out.

At another west side location they found the old crusty dude RK36 Kauai Kolohe resting by seal inlet.

There were two seal all the way to water front rocks. One was RH76 flat out on her back snoozing. She is getting plump. Next to her in the little pond was R3CX Nalu, keeping his eye on her. He is looking pretty green. The two of them were about 100 feet of RK36.

While they were checking on Nalu and Kala they saw another seal from a distance. They headed over and found Lei Ola RH48 on the rocks, snoozing by the camps.  Team R&B did their best to get to the area without waking any of the dogs in the area. Miss Lei Ola was looking quite beautiful shining in the sun with her clean coat.  She was still there on their second check.

07/29/2021 Thursday Monk Seal Dailies

Today's dailies are brought to you by Team T&D, Marilyn, Melody and Team R&B💕.

Team T&D hiked Ka'ena Point and met up with Lesley at the point. They had stopped by to check on RP30 Puka. Just as the arrived he was just hauling out, he has a new applied bleach N30. So nice when they have applied bleach marks, makes it easy for an ID from a distance. T&D's next find was RL98 Lina. She was in the same area several hours later when they were heading out.

At the point they saw the last lone albatross chick.  They spotted a seal on the runway, but the seal didn't give them much for an ID. It "might" be Lefty, but unknown.

Lastly they saw RW02 PvKauai and R3CX Nalu. There was some interaction, some barking and guttural noise between them, but nothing physical.

Team R&B did an early check looking for RL20 Kalua, but for the first time in a very long time he wasn't anywhere to be found.  They did see a seal foraging way way out at the end of the jetty, then it was gone.  They went to check the area but didn't see anything until their friends were frantically waving  over to them.

A seal came into the shore line, and was about to haul out but tourist arrived and the seal got spooked and turned away and left.  When they finally got some photos they were able to ID Kolohe RW22, with his snout wound. They stayed for a bit but no seals returned so they left.

Later on a recheck they found Kolohe RW22 landed on the other side of the jetty. They hurried over and got an ID on Kolohe. While checking him out a pod of dolphins suddenly showed up, quickly passing by. As fast as they appeared, they were gone. Kolohe remained on shore alone snoozing.

The only other seal Team R&B found today was RH32 Kaale. He was resting on the rocks and alone.

Later on a recheck Kaale was in the same spot still snoozing.

Marilyn viewed Rabbit Island between 1:15 to 2:45 and there were three seals on island today. Out on the rock flats Lanikai side of LPB was RK37 Huia. She is subadult size, new coat, light female belly, two tags and a nb on her rear lower left side.

Initially on LPB but later moving to Middle Cliff area was and unknown subadult female (SF).  Subadult, size, old coat, two tags and yellowish female belly with lots of green. This seal was hauling out at LPB, then she reentered the water and hauled out at LPB closer to 1BS. She spent about 30 minutes moving around the beach before she entered the water again. Five minutes later she hauled out at the middle cliff where she moved around a lot. She might have a scar under her right eye.

On the rock flats around SRI was weaner P04 Manana. She was ID'd by  weaner shape and coloration, one tag on RRF and no nbs on front flippers. She spent a lot of time exploring and apparently eating stuff out of the tide pools.

Melody received a text this morning of a seal in Waikiki. Melody was on her way to the area so she stopped by to check and there was Miss Kaiwi RK96.  She was ID'd by the spot on her head. She had a large zone set up and she was by the waters edge.  Melody left for an appointment and returned about 1:00 and she was still there. Volunteer was on site watching over her. Kaiwi is looking very brown/green, but doesn't appear to have started her molt.
