11/22/2020 Sunday Monk Seal Dailies

Today's dailies are brought to you by Team Billand and Marilyn.

Marilyn viewed Rabbit Island between 11:30 and 1:30 pm, conditions were overcast and windy. There were five seals on island today.

At LPB an unknown adult hauled out and moved up the beach. Adult size, newer coat and at least one tag. About 10 minutes later Marilyn became awars of a weaner (UW1) hauling out and moving up to the UA. There was a brief interaction and then they parted. The weaner "may" have had an applied bleach, but between the lack of lighting, wind and high surf it was hard to say for sure.

At 12:45 another weaner hauled out near the 1BS. UW2, no tags and never showed its belly. This

weaner may have had an applied bleach on right rear side which would suggest N2 Nohea. But Marilyn is not sure to call it.

In the Middle Cliff Area Kolohe RW22 was where he was yesterday. He was ID'd by adult size, new coat, gray male belly, and NB behind RFF.

At the 3BS was a third weaner UW3, yellow male belly and no tags. Marilyn thinks maybe there was a L9 bleach that looks like 67 on left front shoulder. This would make this weaner the little Molokai kid that has been on Rabbit Island before.

Team Billand got word last evening about a seal and it was too late for them to head out. So 6:30 this morning they headed out and to their delight the seal was still there. It was Rocky RH58 way inland and there was a sign out. She is looking good, gaining weight and her new coat. At 7:30 Rocky stretched looked around and galumphed slowly to the water. She waited for the next wave and then she was gone, meeting up with a surfer. (What a morning for that surfer)

At 9:30 Team Billand was at the bay and found three seals foraging/fighting. It was very windy making it hard for viewing. After a few hours Kalua RL20 landed, funny thing they never saw him haul out, he was just there.

Lei Ola RH48 was foraging, and laying low. She was with RL20 and another critter doing their playing

and fighting routine. RN44 was spotted, at one point he came close to the rocks. He looked up directly up at a young fisherman as if to ask for a handout. (thankfully that did not happen). He left the rocks and went to play with the other seals.

Then there were the boobies (birds!) diving into the water to catch there breakfast. Amazing to see.

R3CX Nalu just stayed in the water, foraging, fighting and foraging. He never landed today. Thankfully he has the NB on left side of his face for a clear ID marker.

Just before noon Team Billand arrived at another west side location. They were thrilled to find Benny RE74 sleeping. There were a couple of folks hanging close by, and at one point Benny barked at them. Team Billand called the hotline to inform them. Team Billand did their best to set up a zone for Benny to keep folks back. One of the fisherman stopped by to let them know Benny had arrived about 30 minutes before they did.
