After Marilyn got back from the Ka'ena hike along with Lesley and Diane, she headed over to the pier. From the parking lot on the Kailua side of Makai Pier she observed Rabbit Island from about 3:30 to 3:50. There was one seal on the beach and to the right of the 1BS. It looked to be an adult size, but did not show much to determine anything else.
Team Billand was out at 6 am to check on seal they heard was in Makaha. There to their delight was Da Benny in a deep sleep in the chilly air with orange cones around him. One of the guys they spoke to said he came in last night. Team Billand couldn't stay as they had to pick up junior sealette.
By 9:30 Team Billand had made some stops without finding any seals, then finally they found Kekoa Alii RK72. He was on a westside beach resting alone on the rocks.
(sorry there were no photos of Kekoa in the email).
Shortly after they found Kekoa Alii they spotted another seal coming in. It was with another smaller seal and they spent some time frolicking for a bit. All of a sudden Nalu R3CX started vocalizing loudly. The smaller seal went into the cave and although Team Billand could hear them, there were unable to see them.
Then they saw Nalu galumph up on lower rocks still being very vocal. He landed looked and looked around and then settled for a nap.
At about 10:30 they spotted the smaller seal who turned out to be RL20 Kalua looking for a spot to haul out. He went to the left and climbed the rocks.
At 2:30 they found G28 Lefty at a haul out by the outfall.
Ka'ale RH32 was also in the area.
These two critters were the stars along with Kalani in yesterday's underwater photos.
