July 31, 2024 Wednesday's Dailies

Todays dailies are brought to you by Marilyn, posse pal Kathy O and Team R&B💕

Marilyn viewed Rabbit Island from 12:50 to 2:40 pm and there were five seals seen during that time.
On the Lanikai side of LPB was weaner RT19 (PO8):weaner size, shape and color, two red tags and light male belly. RT19 is smaller than RT90 who was not seen today.
In the back middle of LPB were two seals:
Adult Female: adult size, new coat and two red tags.
Adult Male: adult to sub-adult size, tan male belly with a fair amount of green and several scars on the ventral side.
There were two snorkelers in the wave wash of LPB, but they never got out of the water.
Out on Rocky Right Beach were two seals near each other. Marilyn had a difficult time deciding on the size of them so she labeled them both as sub-adults.
Sub-adult Male: sub-adult to adult size, medium gray male belly and two red tags.
Sub-adult Female: sub-adult size, older coat with lots of green on the ventral, female belly and two red tags.

Posse pal Kathy is visiting Kauai and was lucky to have a seal on the beach by where they were staying. From her photos it looks like the tag is F30. Not sure who the critter is but most likely one of Kauai's residents.

Team R&B had a very slow day, they were out and about searching and chatting with folks but spotted no seals.
Finally at the cliffs they were thrilled to see one seal. It was a male, and thankfully the waves would roll him over. That's when they ID'd their boy RH32 Kaale. He is looking green perhaps ready to molt sometime soon.

The only other sighting they had today was unfortunately a dead shark. When they were at Kahe they spotted an animal floating thinking it was a dolphin, but when they spoke to one of the divers he informed them it was a shark
They informed the lifeguard, fearing it would bring more sharks in, but the dead shark floated further out to sea.

July 30, 2024 Tuesday's Dailies

Todays dailies are brought to you by Marilyn and Team R&B💕

Marilyn viewed Rabbit Island from 12:12 to 1:42 pm and there were five seals seen during that time.
Near the back of LPB was weaner RT19 (PO8). At first he slept right up next to the cliff. Later he moved down and entered the water at about 1:25 pm. A short while later he hauled out on the Lanikai back side of LPB and moved up into the rocks near an inlet.
On the 1BS side of LPB were two seals:
RT90 (PO3) Manapua was ID'd by his pudge weaner size and shape.
Near RT90 was an Adult Female, that Marilyn has seen lately: adult size, new coat, light female belly and two red tags.
Between 3BS and SRI was RS12 Hoku: juvenile size, older coat with sark around under the eyes, applied N3 bleach, two red tags and old tan female belly.
Out on RRB was an Unknown Adult: adult size, older coat, no info on tags or sex.

On Marilyn's way home she spotted a seal on one of the beaches so she stopped. It was a sub-adult to adult size, lighter male belly with a fair amount of green and no tags that she could see. He had a superficial C-shaped scar on his left rear side.  After getting home and reviewing the pictures, she thinks this might be R7AF. He was seen in the area on the 12th and his ventral coloring looks similar. Although she should have seen tags which R7AF has.

Team R&B's first find was at Kahe. There was a seal on the rocks who they ID'd as RM31 Kai. They heard there was a seal that was hooked, but they didn't see other seals. They checked out RM31 and didn't see any fishing line or hooks.

Their next find was at the cliffs.  There was RP30 Puka in a good hiding spot in the rocks. He was very cooperative and showed his tags for a positive ID.

Team R&B spotted an adult seal from afar. The seal was at Makua
Beach area and was too far away for them to know who it was. Then they saw some people out by the seal, some took photos, but one person threw things at the seal.  So infuriating to see this and being so far away.
They considered going out there, but the area is private lands, and they decided to not go due to the area being a little sketchy as well.

Then they came across something you don't see everyday.  There was a dog with a life-vest with his owner who was diving.  When the owner dives, the dog barks until the owner surfaces. Cute diving partner.

July 29, 2024 Monday's Dailies

Todays dailies are brought to you by Team R&B💕

Team R&B got a call of a seal out at White Plains. When they got out there was RH92 Nalani. There were topes and signs up for her keeping all the people away. RH92 seemed to be comfortable and unaffected by the crowds.

While onsite they heard of a second seal further down by the last cabin. They went down to check it out and sure enough there was seal way up on shore due to the wild surf. The seal was way up by the greenery.
There were signs up and thankfully Team R&B noticed a wave was just about to take it out, when they
ran to grab it. They got a wee bit wet but saved the sign from getting washed out.
The seal finally popped up due to a wave coming in, and that is when they saw its tag. Although the tag is getting hard to read, they knew it was the lovely, great Mama RH48 Lei Ola.
Team R&B were a little concerned since there were so many people staying in one of the cabins, so they stayed for a while just to make sure Lei Ola was settled in and safe.

July 28, 2024 Sunday's Dailies

Todays dailies are brought to you by Marilyn, posse pal Kathy O and Team R&B💕

Marilyn viewed Rabbit Island today from 1:08 to 2:21 pm and there were four seals seen during that time.
Just as Marilyn was setting up the camera and spotted two seals near SRI and it appeared they were heading for the water. Marilyn only observed them for about two minutes before they were gone for the day.
RS12 Hoku: Juvenile size, N3 applied bleach and two red tags. She followed the UU into the water.
Unknown Unidentified: Seal was already heading into the water and Marilyn could not decide on its size, nor its sex or tag status.
Out on the Lanikai side of LPB was RT19 (PO8) who only showed his ventral size during Marilyn's observations.
An Adult Female started out down from the 1BS, then she moved to the back of LPB and then up near the water.  Adult size, light to medium gray female belly and two red tags.

An email from posse pal Kathy O informed me that Rocky was seen at Iroquois on Saturday evening. Kathy didn't see her last night but did check this morning and Rocky RH58 had left early morning. There was a broken fishing pole by her last evening and it has been removed.

Team R&B got a text this morning of a seal hauling up at Plains. By the time they arrived the seal had left BUT hauled out by the next tower. So they stayed and checked it out. There was the lovely RH92 Nalani. Her tag, right flipper scar and scar under her belly were all visible. She looks good in her new coat, still on the thin side. She needs to fatten up after her molt.

They decided to go check on newly weaned PO10. When they got to the area they spoke to volunteer who told them Rocky left on Friday
day came back at 5 pm and nursed the pup one last time.  He has been given the name IliIli meaning pebbles.  While Team R&B were there the kid was in full snooze mode  They noted he has a natural bleach spot on the right side of his chest.

While down at the waterfront they saw the 100 year old Italian ship anchored here before heading off to Japan.
