April 14, 2023 (part 2) Kaiwi RK96 Gives Birth to PO5

To say the least such an exciting day, and to witness such an amazing event leaves me speechless. A big mahalo to Melody for capturing our beloved Kaiwi giving birth.

So Melody along with Gamma Gayle got to witness all of this as it took place this morning.

Based on Kaiwi's behavior yesterday, they thought it best to check on her today.

Initially she was resting but a little after 10 she started to get restless and was unsettled. At about 10:30 her breathing was more labored and she was lifting her head a lot. At

10:40 she rolled on her side and could see the birth sack starting to crown. That's when Kaiwi started to push more, at one point she rolled on her belly and it was covered by the sack membrane. A short time later the sack broke open and the pup came out. Towards the end everything happened so fast. 

Volunteers on site immediately started to move people further back and began putting up the fencing around Kaiwi and PO5. Melody reluctantly left around noon.
